Great Etsy beauty finds you (probably) had no idea existed

Etsy is a treasure trove of handmade and vintage items. It is more than just crafts and vintage clothes. There at thousands, even tens of thousands, of beauty shops. Because it is all handmade, almost everything out there is organic and vegan friendly. You will find things on Etsy you would never see in shops, some for good reason, but mostly items are original pieces made with love.

For an exhaustive range of sparkly nail polishes, the Vegas based shop ILoveNP has got you covered.

At around £6.82 each, they’re slightly more expensive than a drug store brand, but in which drug stores would you find this colour?

image

Etsy classic, Portland Black Lipstick Company, does exactly what it says on the tin. Great black lipstick for just £9.54. But they also have a range of other similarly ‘alternative’ colours. Their namesake, however, is their best seller.

For cute soaps that you won’t find anywhere else, go to AubreyEApothecary and Soapopotamus. These guys have soaps AubreyE has soaps shaped like sushi:

And even coal (a great stocking filler)

And soapopotamus has deliciously realistic looking Cinnamon buns:

And a half-dozen of the glazed, please

For just £4.77! Turn your bathroom into a mini bakery.

If price isn’t an object, For Strange Women has a delightfully gothic selection of vintage style perfumes in both solid and liquid form, in beautiful packaging. However the cheapest perfumes start at around £35, or you could spend around £100 on solid perfume necklaces.

Finally, Fat and the Moon is a cosmetics company that has natural beauty products from deodorants to lipsticks.

This lip and cheek stain is just £8.18 and will have you going from zero to vamp in 3.5.

So if you are looking for gifts this holiday season, or just want to treat yourself, don’t forget to make Etsy one of your stops before heading out to the shops. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Another Hair Chalk Review or How To Get Kylie Jenner Hair

So I’ve tried a good few hair chalks in my time. I like that they offer you the opportunity to experiment with colour without the commitment. Because I don’t like commitment.

photo 2 (9)

These guys are designed for more precise decoration.

photo 1 (8)

As you can see, I got some chalk on my jumper. Thats why you wear a towel when you’re applying it! These are way better than the Superdrug Spray chalk and even better value than the Kevin Murphy colour bomb at £7.50 for two different colours. So try the Hair Artist Hair Chalks for a bit of extra colour in your life. Do the whole Kylie Jenner thing.

DIY Makeup Tips from Prison!

I am a HUGE Orange is the New Black fan. HUGE. That show gives me life. I am counting the days till series 3. So inspired by one of my favourite shows, I thought I’d compile a list of real beauty tips from ex-inmates.

Eyeliner is apparently available in commissary, however it is one of the more expensive items. So inmates have to get creative.

orange-new-black-season-3-spoilers

Although not necessarily with a sharpie…

Some inmates heat the ends of coloured pencils by soaking them in hot water and then apply as they would a normal kohl liner.

Just like in the show, Kool-Aid can come in handy.

a2215a99178284bcb19f79df4aaf6071

Mixed with vaseline, Kool-Aid can make a substitute lip and cheek stain. In fact you can even use it to dye your hair, but it won’t do it’s condition any good. For lip gloss, some inmates prefer the more subtle colours that Crystal Light provide.

As mentioned in the show, coffee grounds really can be used as eyeshadow. Just mix with a bit of water and dab it on your lids. Applying vaseline to the lids first acts as a primer. And thats not all coffee can do! Add coffee to face cream or moisturiser for a homemade foundation…apparently.

LornaPromo3I love Morello!

Another alternative for a darker lip stain is to harness the natural staining power of cherries and beets. Dwight Schrute eat your heart out!

And my favourite tip of all: Literally rub the T-Mobile advert in the newspaper on your cheeks. According to inmate Annie Burchard, its the perfect pink!

I hope none of you ever need these tips, but if you do at least you won’t have to worry about how you’re going to keep yourself looking fabulous!

2015 beauty trend predictions

The 90s had a comeback in 2014. So it follows suit that the 00s will be the next big thing. Therefore here are the looks I predict to be big in 2015:

  • White girl micro braids

  • Bad fake tan

  • Thin eyebrows

  • Blonde hair with black underneath

Basically anything Xtina did.

I recommend taking cover and waiting for it all to blow over.

Bright Brows

During my fashion week beauty round ups, I briefly mentioned one of the neon brow looks and how to recreate it. But I didn’t go into detail. I keep seeing this look everywhere so I thought I would try it for myself in a variety of different ways that don’t involve any pre bleaching.

For the first method, I just used a lip liner pencil (Mac’s Embrace Me) without any base on the brows:

photo 1 (4)

Obviously I need to get my eyebrows done so ignore the shape, but without any base I thought this worked well. Because its a pencil it was easy to control, however you can still see my hair colour underneath.

The next method I used was applying a base of white pencil, and then going over the brows with a matte eyeshadow:

photo 2 (5)

In terms of covering up my natural brow colour, this worked well. You just need to make sure the eyeshadow you use is pigmented enough to create a more opaque look.

The third method I used was lipstick applied with an eyebrow brush:

photo 3 (5)

This probably worked the least well because despite using a matte lipstick, it still created a very sheer look. When colouring your eyebrows, sheer is the last thing you want.

Finally I used my new Velvetines dupe lip colour, applied with its own wand, and gone over with a Mac lip liner in Currant:

photo 4 (3)

This method was the best for covering my natural eyebrows, but mainly because I used a dark colour. Because the lacquer applies wet and dries matte, it was really good at creating a matte opaque look that lasts all day. It lasts so well in fact that it was hard to take off.

Regardless, this is a fun, albeit bold, look and its a creative take on the eyebrow obsession of the nation.

5 Tips for Hair Growth

beautiful-beautiful-girl-beauty-black-Favim.com-919415

Growing your hair out after a bad hair cut, or just because you’ve decided you want long hair, can be a long, slow, disheartening process. It is easy to be fooled by the products that promise ‘faster hair growth’ but unfortunately they just don’t work. Nothing can actually increase the speed at which your hair grows, but what you can do is stop the ends from breaking which makes your hair look longer in a shorter time.

Usually when we think our hair just isn’t growing, it actually is growing, but the ends are breaking off at the same place. To see real hair growth, we need to protect our ends and make our hair HEALTHIER. Once your hair is healthier, it can grow to much longer lengths without breaking.

tumblr_mzq39isXWB1rq5n0uo1_500

Hair does have a terminal length however. Hair growth supplements and products will try and say terminal length isn’t a thing, but it is. Our hair grows in cycles, and after its growth cycle ends, the hair shaft falls out of the scalp. Everyones terminal length is different but if your hair is stuck at shoulder length, it is unlikely that is has reached terminal length. Its much more likely that the hair is growing but keeps breaking off.

So here are 5 tips that helped me grow my hair when it had been stuck at shoulder length for years.

1. Ditch the heat!

no-hair-dryer

If you are serious about growing your hair, you may need to make this sacrifice. Don’t blow-dry, straighten or curl it. If you are a regular blow drier your hair may look worse before it gets better. For about 2 weeks after I stopped using heat my hair was a frizzy mess, it was so hard not to just give up and style it. But I pushed through the pain barrier and I was thankful for it. Heat protecting products just aren’t enough. Of course it’s possible to use heat safely and grow your hair, but if your hair is really damaged you might have to choose between heat or growth.

2. Say no to bleach

The same goes for lightening your hair. My hair started to give up when I started going blonde. I am naturally brunette and the components of the blonde hair dye was terrible for my hair. I had highlights so I only had to go back every 6 weeks, but if you are dying your hair blonde in block colour, you may be having to re-dye every 2 weeks, reinforcing the damage. I loved being blonde, but I love long hair even more so I chose growth and let the blonde grow out. Luckily the ombre look is in fashion, and people think my grown out roots are part of an expensive hairstyle. When my hair is all healthy again, I might go back to dye but I will stay away from hairdressers that use bleach. It made my hair so brittle I could literally snap off the ends. And yes, I do mean ‘literally’.

3. Oil it up!

I never really used any oils in my hair before I started trying to grow it, as I naturally have very oily hair. But the oil our hair makes doesn’t reach the ends. To keep the ends supple, it is important to use some kind of Argon Oil on the ends. I love Lee Stafford’s Nourishing Miracle Oil (£11.99)

10120818

One bottle lasts ages, as you only need a tiny bit. I use 1 pump on my ends after I wash my hair. Once I started using this my hair really started getting its act together.

4. Treat yo’self

Once a week, do a proper hair conditioning treatment. Not just a 5 minute conditioner, a proper treatment that you apply to damp hair and leave on for up to 25 minutes. I used Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer (£15-27.50)

elasticizer_150_640x560

Yes, it’s hella expensive, but it made a big difference to my hair.

5. To trim or not to trim?

I personally stopped getting my hair trimmed when I grew my hair. I was getting it trimmed every six weeks and not only did it not grow, it got shorter and shorter. Trimming only helps hair look longer because it removes the damage that would have broken off, but to remove all the damage on my hair, I would have had to have shaved it. And that would probably have taken a bit longer to grow out than shoulder length damaged hair. So save your money and just let it grow, and try to prevent any more damage.

Bonus tip: BE PATIENT!

Your hair will start to grow when you stop thinking about it. For me, I just looked in the mirror one day and my hair had actually grown. I had been busy thinking about other things for weeks so it seemed like it just happened over night. Of course, that wasn’t the case. But if you obsess over it, it will seem to take forever. Follow these tips and then just put it out of your head. It is a long process and you might decide it is not worth the effort. But if you want to persevere, there really is no secret. Just time and care. Good luck!

Backstage at the Victoria’s Secret After Party 2014

Last night, after the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show, the Angels made a quick change and headed to an exclusive after party (apparently tickets for civilians cost £11,000). These are some of my favourite beauty looks from the evening:

The Pony Club

I love a sleek ponytail and these girls were representing last night:

photo 2 (1) photo 3 (1)Adriana Lima and Doutzen Kroes

While Adriana went for the slightly more old school high pony, Doutzen opted for the chic nape of the neck tie. Both looked very high glam, but Adriana’s was ‘party till 8am’ whilst Doutzen’s was more ‘going to the Oscars’.

The Bob

photo 1 (1)

Jourdan Dunn looked fun and flirty with a feline flick of her eyeliner and the very fashionable long bob. Its a youthful look that was perfect for her.

Miscellaneous

photo 1 (2)

I love the brown lipstick Magdalena Frackowiak is wearing. A modern take on the 90s look.

photo 2 (2)

Devon Windsor was a knockout with her shock of platinum hair and sixties lashes with nude lips.

Just goes to show, these girls look gorgeous off the catwalk as well as on.

Hair Chalk Spray Review

As you may remember from this post, I love hair chalk. I’m a huge commitment phobe so I like to be able to mess around with different colours and then be able to wash them out. I recently bought Superdrug’s own brand Spray on Hair Chalk (£2.99)

photo 3 (2)

Its a very good price, but the reason is it is only for one use. The can is pretty small and it ran out before I’d even finish using it. Hardly got any blue hair out of it! 😦

photo 1 photo 2

Obviously this particular product is meant just for one use but there wasn’t enough in there to give me blue tips, so if you have long hair or thick hair you will need at least two cans. Also don’t forget to put a towel round your shoulders before you spray it, and make sure you are in a well ventilated area. You don’t want a blue hair chalk coating the inside of your lungs.

The Best Beauty Moments of the AMAs 2014

I was not ready for the high levels of peng that were at last night’s AMAs.

First off, lets talk about Fergie coming out of nowhere and blowing us all away!

Fergie (1) Fergie (2)

That hair colour looks gorgeous on her and with all the long bobs around these days, it’s nice to see someone representing the long hair. Her soft natural makeup looks great with her loose waves. Surprising how such a natural look can be such a knockout, but it just works.

J Lo (as always) looked fantastic.

Jennifer-Lopez (1)

I love the sleeked back wet look hair, because it’s very easy to do with greasy hair (which mine always is). You can just tell people it’s product. The eyeshadow under her lower lash line is smoked out to perfection and she’s rocking some killer Louboutin nails (when the underside of the nails are painted red)

Jordin Sparks

jordin-sparks-american-music-awards-2014-amasJordin-Sparks

BAM! Look at that glam, Studio 54 hair. Jordin looked great channeling 1970s Diana Ross.

The Jenner Faction

photo 1 photo 2

Both of the Jenner sisters looked great. Kendall went for a sleek long bob while Kylie contrasted with her signature blue hair in a messy bun. Their makeup was by Rob Scheppy and for Kylie he used:

Makeup Forever Palette foundation set in Medium Beige with Translucent Natural Powder

Charlotte Tilbury FilmStar Highlight and Contour

Eyeko Lash Wardrobe Black Magic Mascara and Eyeko Brow Liner and Brow Gel

And the one we all want to know about; Mac Lip Liner in Burgandy with Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Lip Balm over the top.

For Kendall he used all Estee Lauder products, because Kendall is now the face of Estee Lauder:

The foundation was Bare Creme

Ivory Powder on the eyes

Star Pink lipgloss

Lovers Blush on the cheeks.

They looked beautiful.

Jhene Aiko posted this picture of her getting ready:

photo 3

Of course she’s already a stunningly beautiful woman, so obviously she looks great, but I particularly like her grecian plait with the curls.

I’m normally not a fan of Rita Ora‘s makeup, personally I don’t like really dark eyebrows with blonde hair, but she did look nice last night:

Rita-Ora (1)

Her makeup looked a lot less severe than usual, because she opted for a more natural lip colour, and her spidery lashes actually go with her spider earrings! That wasn’t shade, spider lashes are having a moment.

And finally, Selena Gomez

Selena-Gomezselena-gomez-american-music-awards-2014-amas-2

Selena looked so chic on the red carpet. Her smooth centre-parted chignon with the burgundy lipstick made her look mature and elegant.

So that’s the AMAs for another year. Now it’s just waiting for the Golden Globes and then, my favourite night because I’m a film nerd, The Oscars!

Celebrities who won Halloween 2014

Halloween is one of my favourite spectator sports.I love watching the costumes roll in on Instagram, and last year the celebs pulled out all the stops. This year there weren’t as many makeup related costumes so I have included a few civilians that did a great job with Halloween makeup.

First up, a great Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) costume by Padma Lakshmi and Susan Sarandon.

photo 1 photo 2 (1)

These skulls are a very popular makeup look on Halloween, but Padma and Susan also went all out with traditional Day of the Dead costumes. It looked very cool.

Amber Rose’s birthday is near Halloween so she often has a joint birthday/halloween party that a lot of celebs attend, and she loves costumes that involve face-changing makeup. This is her as a zombie bride this year:

photo 2

The blood is a really nice touch.

Attending her party was Carmen Electra dressed as a chola

photo 1 (1)

As you know I’ve done this look before, it is a lot of fun to recreate. I particularly like the tattoos.

As expected, my favourite drag queen Sharon Needles looked gore-ific this year:

photo 1

She dressed as a chic Julia from Hellraiser. Terrifying.

A triple whammy from Demi Lovato, J Lo and Iggy Azalea:

photo 1 (2)

Demi payed homage to one of comedy’s greats, Lucille Ball. J Lo just looked hot, and Iggy shot back at the haters by dressing as one of the White Chicks to which she is often compared. No better way to stop people laughing at you than by laughing at yourself. I admire her sense of humour.

I hoped somebody would be Maleficent because it is a great makeup look, and Giuliana Rancic did not disappoint:

photo 3 (1)

Those cheekbones though.

At first I was a bit disappointed by Rihanna’s costume, I expected something outrageous, but her Ninja Turtle was actually pretty cool:

photo 2 (1) photo 3

She looks good in green!

And finally, the person whose costume the world always looks forward to, Heidi Klum:

photo 3 (2) photo 4 (2)

Dressed, in amazing detail, as a butterfly. The makeup on this is insane! Truly transformative. It must have been a fun job to have.

And now some civilians.

Nail Artist @Kandiyamz did some very cute cat makeup:

photo 4 (1)

Nail art must translate pretty well into Makeup art. My favourite part about this look is the ombre lip, and the leopard dots of course.

This makeup look from instagram account @missasheed made me do a double take:

photo 4

Gross, but brilliant.

And this girl @katturnerwashere won the whole of Halloween for me, dressed as Laura Palmer:

photo 3

Amazing. So morbid. So good.

And even though this costume didn’t involve makeup, I have to mention the amazing likeness of this man who dressed as Buster Bluth from Arrested Development:

photo 2

Who did I dress as? Why, Buffy of course!

photo

Happy Halloween!
