Great Etsy beauty finds you (probably) had no idea existed

Etsy is a treasure trove of handmade and vintage items. It is more than just crafts and vintage clothes. There at thousands, even tens of thousands, of beauty shops. Because it is all handmade, almost everything out there is organic and vegan friendly. You will find things on Etsy you would never see in shops, some for good reason, but mostly items are original pieces made with love.

For an exhaustive range of sparkly nail polishes, the Vegas based shop ILoveNP has got you covered.

At around £6.82 each, they’re slightly more expensive than a drug store brand, but in which drug stores would you find this colour?

Etsy classic, Portland Black Lipstick Company, does exactly what it says on the tin. Great black lipstick for just £9.54. But they also have a range of other similarly ‘alternative’ colours. Their namesake, however, is their best seller.

For cute soaps that you won’t find anywhere else, go to AubreyEApothecary and Soapopotamus. These guys have soaps AubreyE has soaps shaped like sushi:

Gummy bears

And even coal (a great stocking filler)

And soapopotamus has deliciously realistic looking Cinnamon buns:

Liquid ‘honey’ soap

And a half-dozen of the glazed, please

For just £4.77! Turn your bathroom into a mini bakery.

If price isn’t an object, For Strange Women has a delightfully gothic selection of vintage style perfumes in both solid and liquid form, in beautiful packaging. However the cheapest perfumes start at around £35, or you could spend around £100 on solid perfume necklaces.

Finally, Fat and the Moon is a cosmetics company that has natural beauty products from deodorants to lipsticks.

This lip and cheek stain is just £8.18 and will have you going from zero to vamp in 3.5.

So if you are looking for gifts this holiday season, or just want to treat yourself, don’t forget to make Etsy one of your stops before heading out to the shops. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Home remedies for bleaching facial hair

Deciding whether to bleach that ‘stache is a choice. You can just rock it Frida Kahlo style (one of my idols). But if you do choose to lighten your facial hairs, here’s a home remedy that is less powerful than bleaching, but much friendlier to your skin.

Lemon juice is natures bleach. Just mix lemon juice and honey to form a paste and apply to the area. Leave for 20 minutes before removing (unless you experience irritation).

According to, there are two other fruit based remedies that can also work.

Tomatoes, believe it or not, can lighten facial hair. You just have to rub a cut tomato half over the areas you want to bleach and then leave the juice on for 4 minutes before washing off.

And papayas. You can mix papaya pulp with milk to form a paste and then massage into the dark hairs for 10 minutes. After you have finished rubbing it in, leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing.

Obviously, because these are all fruits that you can ingest, the bleaching effect is mild. You may have to repeat the process a few times for the lightest results. But it’s all safe to do because it’s food!

Good luck!

The evolution of the eyebrow

From Ancient Greece, to modern day, the eyebrow has undergone quite a lot of changes. Some of the trends are cyclical, some (hopefully) are one offs. But it’s definitely safe to say that eyebrows are not just a modern day obsession.

In Ancient Greece, the unibrow was king

image image

The 1920s saw the arrival of the pencil thin curved brow

image image

By the 1940s some sense had been recovered thanks to the gorgeous arches of stars like Lauren Bacall

This trend has remained as a staple ever since. However there have been variations. For example the bushy brows of the 1980s

image image

They went super thin again in the 90s.

Which brings us to the defined, albeit slightly over made up, arches of today.

But when done properly, they can look pretty peng.

What’s next for the eyebrow?

Kylie Jenner reveals secret to her full lips

Girls: stop doing crazy diy things to your lips to try and get the Kylie Jenner look! It’s officially been revealed that Kylie had her lips done so no amount of lip liner is going to get you the Kylie Jenner look.

In this clip from KKUTK, Khloe Kardashian reveals that Kylie had her lips ‘plumped’. Then in a later clip, Kylie herself confesses to having fillers.

So now we know. I am very saddened by this news. The fact that a child (she was 16 when her lips tripled in size) would feel that she had to have injections in her lips to achieve a beauty ideal is incredibly disturbing and reflects the pressure on young girls to be sexual objects. Poor Kylie. She was perfect as she was and I hope she will receive nothing but support from the public.

Happy Star Wars Day!

In honour of Star Wars day, I thought I’d bring you a Princess Leia hair tutorial!

Most of the tutorials involve sock buns, unless you have one of those fancy hair donuts. Here is the easiest and most straight forward video I could find.

Courtesy of

If you don’t have a hair donut, you will have to sacrifice two socks, but it is definitely the easiest way to get the look.

I tried it out myself…

Help me, Obi Wan! Didn’t go quite so seamlessly for me because I am rubbish at sock buns, but you can tell who I’m supposed to be. Probably.

Good luck, and May the Force be with you.

African Black Soap: The Miracle Skincare Product

African Black soap has long been praised for its miraculous curative effects on acne. After I came across some in my local health food shop/yoga centre I couldn’t wait to try it.

African Black soap is suitable for all skin types and can be used as a replacement for your ordinary face wash. I was skeptical as to how affective a soap could be on my skin. I never really think that my cleanser has any effect on my skin, because we wash it right off! But after a week I can definitely see some positive changes in my skin. My breakouts are less frequent, my scars are faded, and my skin is so soft.

It has a different effect on everyone, and each batch is unique. Therefore you cannot predict how your skin will react. It can be too drying on some skin and it can even burn, so its a good idea to test it on a small part of your skin before you rub it all over your face. Some people like to cut the raw soap with other ingredients such as shea butter to make it easier on the skin.

As well as being great for acne, it is full of antioxidants, it helps fade discolouration, it is healing and has even been known to be great for exzema and psoriasis. It is definitely worth trying.

Not another nude palette..

You would think that the makeup world was already saturated with nude eyeshadow palettes. Urban Decay alone has three very high profile Naked palettes. But this one is so pretty…

Its the new YSL NU Couture Variation Palette. There are 10 fabulous colours along the reddish/pink scale of nudes, for just £49 (aka a lot of money). Even though it is pretty damn expensive, if you love brands and you are looking for the perfect collection of nudes then why not splash out. It also comes with a handy double ended brush for flawless application. And when you think about it, 10 YSL eyeshadows for £49 is actually pretty good value.

Of course, there are tons of cheaper alternatives, but if you have the cash to burn, this is without a doubt the prettiest and the fanciest.

Does the shot glass lip plumper really work?

Recently people have started doing something crazy. In order to get fuller looking lips, girls and boys have been suctioning their lips with a shot glass. It is bizarre. Not only does it look ridiculous, but the science behind it is bonkers. Pulling your lips into a vacuum is going to make your lips bigger for all of five seconds. It like thinking that stretching your lips with your hands is going to make them bigger.

But I tried it anyway just to prove my theory.

Here are my lips before:

I then got a shot glass and placed is over my lips and sucked until my lips were pulled into the glass. I kept it on for about 30 seconds and this was the result:

For a full five seconds, my lips looked plumper. Then they went back to their normal shape and I was left with a red ring all around the bottom half of my face.

Come on, guys. Are we really that desperate to have fuller looking lips? Why can’t we be happy with what we’ve got, or use makeup to make them look bigger like everybody else.

Getting punched in the mouth will also make your lips look bigger. Or sticking the suction end of the hoover on them. But we’re not going to start doing those things just for beauty, are we? At least, I hope not…

If you have thin lips and you don’t like them, try the old fashioned techniques. Lip liner, staying away from dark lipsticks, and playing up your eyes. Or learn to love them. The Kylie Jenner phenomenon has made it seem like everyone is obsessed with lips but in the real world, nobody cares. Websites like TMZ just don’t have anything better to write about.

So please, boys and girls, do not think for a second you need to suction a shot glass to your lips. It doesn’t work and you’re beautiful the way you are.

The Queen of Winged Eyeliner

Since Nicki Minaj’s make-under, she has been sporting some wicked eye-liner. Her makeup artist, Joyce Bonelli, may have been responsible for some more disastrous looks in the past but she really redeemed herself by simplifying Nicki’s look down to one classic, staple feature.

Nicki’s makeup at NYFW was the best eyeliner I’ve ever seen

It’s undeniable, Nicki Minaj is the Queen of the Winged Liner.

Mac Cinderella Collection

Mac is releasing their Cinderella collection to coincide with the movie release in March.

It will consist of:

Two lipsticks. The more pinky nude is Royal Ball and the browner nude is Free as a Butterfly.

Two lipglasses in Happily Ever After and Glass Slipper (almost identical, right?)

One eyeshadow palette:

Two ‘Eye Glosses’ in Lightly Tauped and Pearl Varnish

This is a new type of product, one that I haven’t seen from Mac before. It seems to be one of those sheer ultra glossy cream eyeshadows.

There’s also a line of Fluidline gel liners in two different colours: Little Black Bow and Macrviolet

There are two gorgeous looking powder highlighter in Coupe D’Chic and Mystery Princess

Three pressed pigments (although one is actually glitter!) in Reflects Pearl, Evil Stepmother and Pretty It Up:

The Olive pigment seems a bit incongruous with the rest of the collection but hey, its Mac.

There’s also a mascara and two brushes (boring)

I have to say this is the nicest collection to come out of Mac in a while. The movie doesn’t seem like much to get excited about (Its certainly no ‘Into The Woods’) but at least the makeup is cute. I wonder if any of the normal public will be able to get hold of any of the products before the sell out.
