Inherent Vice inspired beauty look

photo 3 (7)

Inherent Vice is a fantastic film set in the sixties, based on a Thomas Pynchon book, full of great female characters. Last night I found myself subconsciously imitating their sixties glam.

photo 1 (10) photo 2 (9)

These women knew how to wield a liquid eyeliner pen.

The look was all about a thick eyeliner flick on the upper lid, at least one pair of big false eyelashes, and cut crease eyeliner. This would be paired with nude matte lips and some dark brows to balance it out. The front of the hair was parted on the side, and the back of the hair was usually centre parted or just poofed up.

My attempt.

I wore a black turtle neck dress to complete the look. Its not quite a Shasta Fay but it was good enough for me.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Makeup

In honour of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in London tonight, I thought I’d do a VS makeup look. Their girls always look so glowy and the makeup is really easy to copy.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 photo 4

The cheeks are very bronzed and glowy, with a natural pink gloss on the lips and gold and bronze eyeshadows on the eyes. They also use a lot of shimmer including under the eyes and on the cupids bow of the lips.

This is the look I did:

photo 3 (4)photo 2 (4)

For the base I used a radiance primer (Laura Mercier) and then YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat foundation mixed with a bit of NARS highlighter in Copacabana. This just adds more glow.

photo 3 (3)

On the eyes, I used Half Baked from the Urban Decay Naked palette for the gold all over the lid, then for the outer corner I used a bronze shadow from a NARS palette. I just did a thin line of gel eyeliner. Under the lower lashes I applied pressed power highlighter and lined the water line with a white pencil. I added dots of kohl liner on the lash line and then applied Clinique mascara. Of course, the Angels wear at least one pair of lashes, but I am currently out of falsies so I had to make do with my own lashes. In the corner of my eyes, just by the tear ducts, I applied a bit of highlighter. This gives a more wide awake look to the eyes.

photo 2 (3)

For the lips, I first of all lined them with a Chanel lip pencil in Natural and then went over them with Benefit lipgloss in Who Are You Wearing. I added a dab of shimmery highlighter to the cupids bow. This makes them seem fuller.

I finished off the look with some MORE highlighter, applied to the cheekbones and temples: Mac’s skinfinish in Superb. I finally added the blusher, Aglow by Clinique. This is a peachy/tan blusher which matches the colour favoured by the Angels.

photo 4 (2)

I love this look because its simple enough for daytime but its still glam and pretty. Perfect for school or work.

My favourite YouTube Beauty Gurus

I don’t watch many makeup videos on YouTube tbh, but when I do, its one of these guys.

First up is my girl Camila Coelho. Her English channel is MakeUpByCamila2. She is Brazilian so most of her videos are in Portuguese but she does separate ones for her English speaking fans. My favourite of her tutorials is the Valentine’s Day look

maxresdefault

Next is Huda Kattan. A beauty blogger based in Dubai who posts killer makeup and beauty tips. My favourite video is her Lipliner Tutorial where she goes over the basics any girl needs if she want to learn the secrets of overlining (alla Kylie Jenner)

Fullscreen-capture-13072014-162424.bmp-e1405327478731

I learnt most of my makeup skills from drag queens, so its no surprise that my favourite makeup tutorials are by drag queens such as Vivienne Pinay, Miss Fame and Fendi Laken

ViviennePinay09_zps880a10c0

Of course, if you aren’t a drag queen you can skip a lot of the stages in the videos, and you don’t have to be as exaggerated with your makeup, but they are a really good source of tips and inspiration.

Happy YouTubing!

The Best Beauty Moments of the AMAs 2014

I was not ready for the high levels of peng that were at last night’s AMAs.

First off, lets talk about Fergie coming out of nowhere and blowing us all away!

Fergie (1) Fergie (2)

That hair colour looks gorgeous on her and with all the long bobs around these days, it’s nice to see someone representing the long hair. Her soft natural makeup looks great with her loose waves. Surprising how such a natural look can be such a knockout, but it just works.

J Lo (as always) looked fantastic.

Jennifer-Lopez (1)

I love the sleeked back wet look hair, because it’s very easy to do with greasy hair (which mine always is). You can just tell people it’s product. The eyeshadow under her lower lash line is smoked out to perfection and she’s rocking some killer Louboutin nails (when the underside of the nails are painted red)

Jordin Sparks

jordin-sparks-american-music-awards-2014-amasJordin-Sparks

BAM! Look at that glam, Studio 54 hair. Jordin looked great channeling 1970s Diana Ross.

The Jenner Faction

photo 1 photo 2

Both of the Jenner sisters looked great. Kendall went for a sleek long bob while Kylie contrasted with her signature blue hair in a messy bun. Their makeup was by Rob Scheppy and for Kylie he used:

Makeup Forever Palette foundation set in Medium Beige with Translucent Natural Powder

Charlotte Tilbury FilmStar Highlight and Contour

Eyeko Lash Wardrobe Black Magic Mascara and Eyeko Brow Liner and Brow Gel

And the one we all want to know about; Mac Lip Liner in Burgandy with Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Lip Balm over the top.

For Kendall he used all Estee Lauder products, because Kendall is now the face of Estee Lauder:

The foundation was Bare Creme

Ivory Powder on the eyes

Star Pink lipgloss

Lovers Blush on the cheeks.

They looked beautiful.

Jhene Aiko posted this picture of her getting ready:

photo 3

Of course she’s already a stunningly beautiful woman, so obviously she looks great, but I particularly like her grecian plait with the curls.

I’m normally not a fan of Rita Ora‘s makeup, personally I don’t like really dark eyebrows with blonde hair, but she did look nice last night:

Rita-Ora (1)

Her makeup looked a lot less severe than usual, because she opted for a more natural lip colour, and her spidery lashes actually go with her spider earrings! That wasn’t shade, spider lashes are having a moment.

And finally, Selena Gomez

Selena-Gomezselena-gomez-american-music-awards-2014-amas-2

Selena looked so chic on the red carpet. Her smooth centre-parted chignon with the burgundy lipstick made her look mature and elegant.

So that’s the AMAs for another year. Now it’s just waiting for the Golden Globes and then, my favourite night because I’m a film nerd, The Oscars!

AmfAR Gala 2014 Beauty Roundup

The annual amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) Gala is a black tie event thrown to raise money for the foundation and awareness of AIDS/HIV. Many celebrities attend and often it is a time for headline grabbing outfits, as this gets the foundation even more attention in the press. Celebrities are often criticised for their daring outfits but it is all to draw attention to the foundation and the good work it does.

This year the headlines were mainly about Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. This post with similarly be mainly about Rihanna as she looked, as always, fan-bloody-tastic.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 (2)

That makeup. Come on. Flawless!

giphy giphy (1)

She has the perfect 80s orange lipstick to match her skin tone and her eye makeup, which is a burnt orange colour. All this makes her green eyes pop, and the chronic lashes for days add glamour.

The Hair

photo 3 photo 4 (2)

I LOVE the sleek ponytail look. It’s something I do a lot to instantly solve a bad hair day and it’s really easy to recreate. They look great with a centre or a side parting. Rihanna is rocking hers with a side parting which adds a bit of retro glamour to her look.

Next up, Miley’s makeup was actually really cute:

photo 4

The feline flick eye liner complimented her pixie crop and works really well with her elfin features. I would like to see this look on her more often,.

Lea Michelle looked FIRE

photo 1 (1) photo 4 (1)

Lea Michelle has the best beauty team. She always steals the show for me on the red carpet. I love the brown smokey eye, it works so well with her chocolate brown eyes and caramel highlights. Her hair is big and beautiful, and even though I don’t think the bronzer is the right colour for her, it does match her highlights.

Alessandra Ambrosio

photo 2 (1) photo 1 (2)

Another example of a great sleek ponytail, this time with a centre parting. When you have an intricate dress and makeup, it is always best to go for simple and elegant hair. This ponytail works perfectly for that purpose.

Kelly Osbourne

photo 2 (2)

I like this makeup because it reminds me of one of my staple looks. I often like to go for an edgier bold liner with that barbie pink shade of lipstick. It works really well with Kelly’s unique style and it’s very youthful. I used to use the Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick but as it’s limited edition and mines running low, a look-a-like is Mac’s Saint Germain (£15.50).

M3LNC0

I can’t wait to see what these guys do for Halloween tonight!

The best painted Queens in Drag Race herstory

While all us RuPaul fans are waiting for series 7 of Drag Race to start, I thought I’d crown my own winner of each season…for their makeup. Drag makeup is a lot more complex than anything girls have to go through on a saturday night. Drag Queens have to transform their face from male to female which takes a lot of illusion and painting skills. Just watch any of the many transformation videos available on youtube. In fact I learnt some of my best makeup tricks from Drag Queens, but I have never had to know the ordeal of covering my beard, glueing my eyebrows down or contouring my face from a male shape to a fierce female.

So without further ado, here are my list of America’s Next MAKEUP Superstars, season by season.

Starting with Season One:

Nina Flowers

d8c7617bf2c13a1ff88b485c169f054a

Nina’s punk glam look went down very well with the judges, and she made it into the final two. She did admit to getting up at 5am the morning the contest started to paint her face, but it pays off. Her face is a work of art.

Season Two:

Raven

drag5

Raven knew how to beat a face. She looks like a Mac face chart.

Season Three:

"Rupaul's Drag Race" Season 5 Finale, Reunion & Coronation Taping

Being a professional makeup artist, Raja had all the other Queens beat in terms of makeup. I rooted for her the second she walked in the door.

Season Four:

Chad Michaels

chad-michaels-2013

Oh, season four. This may be my favourite season. I was a Sharon Needles girl from day one, however on this series, nobody beat a face like Chad and her Cher realness.

Season Five:

Detox

tumblr_n8gow5XO281qlq7wio1_1280

Purely for this black and white reunion look. My jaw hit the floor. Also, Alaska should have won…but that’s none of my business

kermit-lipton-hed-2013

Season Six:

Ornacia

Bgq0GhSCEAAZBlC

No, I’m totally kidding. I would have say the best makeup of this season goes to:

Milk

f39fa13f40e5aaad61c275fd3d616815

For doing something different.

But out of all these, I have to say my over all Makeup Superstar has to be

4ae33d2d49d99a529f60151c2e7d43a6

Raven!

Thankyou Drag Race for continuing to inspire, can’t wait to see was Season 7 brings.

Great Budget Beauty Buys

I absolutely love the store ‘& Other Stories’. When I go there with my Mum she spends hours looking at the clothes and shoes, and I spend hours looking at the jewellery and makeup. It is the store with something for everyone. I went in the other day and found some great beauty buys that won’t break the bank.

photo 2 (23)

First up, this Concealer Quad (£12). It consists of 4 different skin tone colours designed to suit any concealing needs. However, it should be called a contour quad because that is what it does best. With 4 vastly varied cream colours, this can be used to highlight and contour a multitude of skin tones.

And speaking of contouring, they also have a Face Contour Cream for £10

photo 3 (16)

It looks very dark but with the right amount of blending (I recommend a Beauty Blender Sponge) you will be able to sculpt and define brand new cheek bones and a thinner nose.

And lastly, my favourite, is this much more affordable alternative to NARS’ Matte Multiple (albeit they aren’t matte)

photo 1 (24)

These Multi Tint Sticks (£10) can be used, as the name implies, a multitude of ways,. Cheeks, eyes, lips, whatever you want. They come in 6 colours ranging from the very light shimmery, to a deep bronze. And the best part is you could get 3 for the price of 1 NARS Matte Multiple.

I promise I am not on the & Other Stories pay roll in any way, I just really love this shop. If you can’t get to the store itself, try their website www.stories.com.

NARS: Matte Multiples Review

One of the new exciting things to come out of NARS this year is the Matte Multiples collection. A collection of colour sticks that can be used as blush, lipstick, contour, even eyeshadow. Sounds amazing, but for £30 (which is expensive, even for NARS) I had to see if they were worth the price.

Image

There are 7 shades. They can be split into lips and face but there’s nothing stopping you mixing them around.

Here are the swatches I took:

Image

(from left to right:) Cappadoce, Vientaine, Altai (generally considered the contour sticks) and Laos, Exumas, Siam and Anguilla (for lips and blush)

Evidently they are well pigmented, however the pigmentation in Exumas and Anguilla was a bit blotchy, like when you apply a cheap lipstick and there’s lumps of pigmentation and it dries your lips out. This could be because they were a bit dried out themselves from having their lids off, or they might just not be very good.

Cappadoce and Vientaine were also quite blotchy, although they don’t quite have the lumps that Exumas and Anguilla have. And this could be remedied by blending with a beauty sponge.

I kept the swatches on all day to see how well they lasted and this was the result:

Image

Anguilla has almost disappeared and the blotchiness has gotten worse, however the rest have lasted quite well. Which you would expect from NARS. But for £30 EACH I would expect better.

Overall, I wouldn’t buy. If they were even £5 cheaper I would consider it. But even if money was no object, I do not think they’re worth £30.

My 5 minute Pictorial for perfect cheekbones

This is just a really quick and easy look for nice glowy cheekbones and a bit of definition.

Image

Step 1 – First of all apply a good face primer. I use NARS Pro-prime Radiance Enhancing Primer. A bit of a mouthful but it’s amazing.

Step 2 – Apply your foundation. I use Le Tient Touche Éclat by YSL applied with a Beauty Blending sponge.

Step 3 – Concealer. I use NARS Creamy Concealer in Vanilla. Always use at least one shade lighter than your foundation with concealer. It is better at reflecting light away from any flaws instead of drawing attention to them. Also you can use it to highlight.

Step 4 – Hightlighter. I use a couple of highlighters but this one is NARS Illuminator in Copacabana. Apply a few dots along the top of the cheekbone. A little goes a long way. Blend with the tapered end of a Beauty Blending sponge.

Step 5 – To contour under my cheekbones I use the Naked eyeshadow from the Naked original palette by Urban Decay and a large eyeshadow shader brush. I use this colour because it isn’t orange like most bronzers, it is just a light brown matte shade and with a small brush it adds perfect definition. Apply under the cheekbone.

Step 6 – Blush is great for adding some colour for a day look. For a more glam evening look however I would probably avoid it. Apply it to the apples of your cheeks. I use Mac Sheertone blush in Pink Swoon.

Step 7 – This is when I use another highlighter to go over the top of the other one and blend in with the blusher. I use Mac Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Superb with a contour brush (Mac 168) and just sweep the powder up towards the temples.

And there you have it. Sculpted cheekbones without expensive cheek implants.
