My favourite YouTube Beauty Gurus

I don’t watch many makeup videos on YouTube tbh, but when I do, its one of these guys.

First up is my girl Camila Coelho. Her English channel is MakeUpByCamila2. She is Brazilian so most of her videos are in Portuguese but she does separate ones for her English speaking fans. My favourite of her tutorials is the Valentine’s Day look

maxresdefault

Next is Huda Kattan. A beauty blogger based in Dubai who posts killer makeup and beauty tips. My favourite video is her Lipliner Tutorial where she goes over the basics any girl needs if she want to learn the secrets of overlining (alla Kylie Jenner)

I learnt most of my makeup skills from drag queens, so its no surprise that my favourite makeup tutorials are by drag queens such as Vivienne Pinay, Miss Fame and Fendi Laken

ViviennePinay09_zps880a10c0

Of course, if you aren’t a drag queen you can skip a lot of the stages in the videos, and you don’t have to be as exaggerated with your makeup, but they are a really good source of tips and inspiration.

Happy YouTubing!

Celebrities who won Halloween 2014

Halloween is one of my favourite spectator sports.I love watching the costumes roll in on Instagram, and last year the celebs pulled out all the stops. This year there weren’t as many makeup related costumes so I have included a few civilians that did a great job with Halloween makeup.

First up, a great Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) costume by Padma Lakshmi and Susan Sarandon.

photo 1 photo 2 (1)

These skulls are a very popular makeup look on Halloween, but Padma and Susan also went all out with traditional Day of the Dead costumes. It looked very cool.

Amber Rose’s birthday is near Halloween so she often has a joint birthday/halloween party that a lot of celebs attend, and she loves costumes that involve face-changing makeup. This is her as a zombie bride this year:

photo 2

The blood is a really nice touch.

Attending her party was Carmen Electra dressed as a chola

photo 1 (1)

As you know I’ve done this look before, it is a lot of fun to recreate. I particularly like the tattoos.

As expected, my favourite drag queen Sharon Needles looked gore-ific this year:

photo 1

She dressed as a chic Julia from Hellraiser. Terrifying.

A triple whammy from Demi Lovato, J Lo and Iggy Azalea:

photo 1 (2)

Demi payed homage to one of comedy’s greats, Lucille Ball. J Lo just looked hot, and Iggy shot back at the haters by dressing as one of the White Chicks to which she is often compared. No better way to stop people laughing at you than by laughing at yourself. I admire her sense of humour.

I hoped somebody would be Maleficent because it is a great makeup look, and Giuliana Rancic did not disappoint:

photo 3 (1)

Those cheekbones though.

At first I was a bit disappointed by Rihanna’s costume, I expected something outrageous, but her Ninja Turtle was actually pretty cool:

photo 2 (1) photo 3

She looks good in green!

And finally, the person whose costume the world always looks forward to, Heidi Klum:

photo 3 (2) photo 4 (2)

Dressed, in amazing detail, as a butterfly. The makeup on this is insane! Truly transformative. It must have been a fun job to have.

And now some civilians.

Nail Artist @Kandiyamz did some very cute cat makeup:

photo 4 (1)

Nail art must translate pretty well into Makeup art. My favourite part about this look is the ombre lip, and the leopard dots of course.

This makeup look from instagram account @missasheed made me do a double take:

photo 4

Gross, but brilliant.

And this girl @katturnerwashere won the whole of Halloween for me, dressed as Laura Palmer:

photo 3

Amazing. So morbid. So good.

And even though this costume didn’t involve makeup, I have to mention the amazing likeness of this man who dressed as Buster Bluth from Arrested Development:

Who did I dress as? Why, Buffy of course!

Happy Halloween!

AmfAR Gala 2014 Beauty Roundup

The annual amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) Gala is a black tie event thrown to raise money for the foundation and awareness of AIDS/HIV. Many celebrities attend and often it is a time for headline grabbing outfits, as this gets the foundation even more attention in the press. Celebrities are often criticised for their daring outfits but it is all to draw attention to the foundation and the good work it does.

This year the headlines were mainly about Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. This post with similarly be mainly about Rihanna as she looked, as always, fan-bloody-tastic.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 (2)

That makeup. Come on. Flawless!

giphy giphy (1)

She has the perfect 80s orange lipstick to match her skin tone and her eye makeup, which is a burnt orange colour. All this makes her green eyes pop, and the chronic lashes for days add glamour.

The Hair

photo 3 photo 4 (2)

I LOVE the sleek ponytail look. It’s something I do a lot to instantly solve a bad hair day and it’s really easy to recreate. They look great with a centre or a side parting. Rihanna is rocking hers with a side parting which adds a bit of retro glamour to her look.

Next up, Miley’s makeup was actually really cute:

photo 4

The feline flick eye liner complimented her pixie crop and works really well with her elfin features. I would like to see this look on her more often,.

Lea Michelle looked FIRE

photo 1 (1) photo 4 (1)

Lea Michelle has the best beauty team. She always steals the show for me on the red carpet. I love the brown smokey eye, it works so well with her chocolate brown eyes and caramel highlights. Her hair is big and beautiful, and even though I don’t think the bronzer is the right colour for her, it does match her highlights.

Alessandra Ambrosio

photo 2 (1) photo 1 (2)

Another example of a great sleek ponytail, this time with a centre parting. When you have an intricate dress and makeup, it is always best to go for simple and elegant hair. This ponytail works perfectly for that purpose.

Kelly Osbourne

photo 2 (2)

I like this makeup because it reminds me of one of my staple looks. I often like to go for an edgier bold liner with that barbie pink shade of lipstick. It works really well with Kelly’s unique style and it’s very youthful. I used to use the Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick but as it’s limited edition and mines running low, a look-a-like is Mac’s Saint Germain (£15.50).

I can’t wait to see what these guys do for Halloween tonight!

The best painted Queens in Drag Race herstory

While all us RuPaul fans are waiting for series 7 of Drag Race to start, I thought I’d crown my own winner of each season…for their makeup. Drag makeup is a lot more complex than anything girls have to go through on a saturday night. Drag Queens have to transform their face from male to female which takes a lot of illusion and painting skills. Just watch any of the many transformation videos available on youtube. In fact I learnt some of my best makeup tricks from Drag Queens, but I have never had to know the ordeal of covering my beard, glueing my eyebrows down or contouring my face from a male shape to a fierce female.

So without further ado, here are my list of America’s Next MAKEUP Superstars, season by season.

Starting with Season One:

Nina Flowers

d8c7617bf2c13a1ff88b485c169f054a

Nina’s punk glam look went down very well with the judges, and she made it into the final two. She did admit to getting up at 5am the morning the contest started to paint her face, but it pays off. Her face is a work of art.

Season Two:

Raven

drag5

Raven knew how to beat a face. She looks like a Mac face chart.

Season Three:

"Rupaul's Drag Race" Season 5 Finale, Reunion & Coronation Taping

Being a professional makeup artist, Raja had all the other Queens beat in terms of makeup. I rooted for her the second she walked in the door.

Season Four:

Chad Michaels

chad-michaels-2013

Oh, season four. This may be my favourite season. I was a Sharon Needles girl from day one, however on this series, nobody beat a face like Chad and her Cher realness.

Season Five:

Detox

tumblr_n8gow5XO281qlq7wio1_1280

Purely for this black and white reunion look. My jaw hit the floor. Also, Alaska should have won…but that’s none of my business

kermit-lipton-hed-2013

Season Six:

Ornacia

Bgq0GhSCEAAZBlC

No, I’m totally kidding. I would have say the best makeup of this season goes to:

Milk

f39fa13f40e5aaad61c275fd3d616815

For doing something different.

But out of all these, I have to say my over all Makeup Superstar has to be

4ae33d2d49d99a529f60151c2e7d43a6

Raven!

Thankyou Drag Race for continuing to inspire, can’t wait to see was Season 7 brings.

Dress Up look: Cholaaaa

Sometimes I like to dress up and see how many cool things I can do with my makeup. If I was a boy, I’d be a drag queen. Anyway I had some free time so did a look I’ve been wanting to play around with for aaaages. CHOLA B*$£%ES!

Image

Next halloween look? Seeing as we are all embracing the nineties. Although both RiRi and Karreuche did this last halloween (awkward), but it’s a really fun look. I just blasted the reggaeton and made sure I had plenty of black liner and it was pretty easy. I already pretty much dress like this anyway.

Image

Image

All you need to do is line the hell out of your eyes (tear drops optional) draw on some thin black upside down Nike tick eyebrows, and line your lips with a black kohl pencil. These are the staple looks. Then just grab your bandanna and your plaid shirt and some MAJUH attitude and go and scare your neighbours. If you have baby hairs, gel them down! And don’t smile.

A great look for a costume party.

Who wore it better last halloween? RiRi or Kae?

Or does Nicki have them both beat?

No Girls Allowed: Men’s Skincare 101

This post is just for the boys. Since Joe Biden revealed the secret to his gorgeous skin (Clinique for Men) it’s got me thinking about whether this is a subject boys would appreciate some direction in. Biden claimed he just uses what his wife tells him to, but I think you guys are capable of making your own decisions on your skincare, there just aren’t many beauty blogs that focus on men so it is hard to know where to start.

Image

Joe Biden revealed to Rachael Ray the secret to his glowing skin is Clinique. As if I could love him any more. Clinique is an absolute classic in skin care for men and women. Clinique have a line designed especially for men, the standard moisturiser costs £23. This is just a simple moisturiser with SPF so if you find all the specific treatments a bit intimidating, this is a great place to start.

Image

If you are already comfortable with moisturisers and want to target more specific problems, Clinique for Men also has creams for dark spot correcting, blemishes, fatigue and anti-ageing.

If you want a product that will impress whoever is going through your medicine cabinet, Tom Ford has a men’s skincare range. It is pricey but if I saw them in a boy’s bathroom I would be very impressed/jealous. Their daily moisturiser is £75 (eek!) so this is really top end of the budget. They also do a concealer for £32 and is designed especially for men to help cover up blemishes, redness or razor cuts.

You don’t need to spend a lot, however, for a good basic moisturiser. Nivea for Men have a re-hydrating moisturiser for £6.95 which, as the name implies, is good for dehydrated skin as well as dry skin. Dehydrated is an often overlooked skin care issue. Nivea also have a wide range of products to ease shaving and to cool the skin afterwards. Another cheap but effective moisturiser is Vaseline Men Extra Strength Body and Face Lotion (£3.73) (As seen in Esquire). Apply this at night to make the morning shave more comfortable and less irritating.

Image

Another popular brand among men’s skincare is Kiehls. Their Facial Fuel range is incredibly popular and their “caffeine and vitamin non oily formula” claims to “energize the skin and control shine” so this is one for those of you who have trouble getting to bed on time (Facial Fuel Energizing Moisturiser £21). This range also includes cleansers, exfoliating scrubs and eye creams. All of which are products which everyone should be using, regardless of gender.

Image

I hope this helped some boys out there decide which direction to go in when entering the confusing world of skin care. For those who are already experienced in this area, I know this post is very basic but it is mainly aimed at those who are completely new to skin care. Any requests or questions, feel free to comment.

Mermaid Eye Makeup Pictorial.

For my second pictorial I thought I would do an eye look, and I really wanted something using ‘chaos’ from the Urban Decay Vice palette so I came up with this mermaid look. Enjoy:

Image

I used five main colours to achieve this look:

Image

Chaos, Occupy, Unhinged, Junkie and Penny Lane.

Step 1 – Apply Chaos all over lid

Step 2 – Apply Unhinged just above the crease

Step 3 – BLEND

Step 4 – Highlight with a lighter eyeshadow on the brow bone (I used Anonymous from the same palette)

Step 5 – Apply Junkie under the lower lashes and go over with Occupy

Step 6 – Apply Penny Lane in the inner corner of the eye

Step 7 – Line the eyes with Mac’s Fluidline eyeliner in Blacktrack

Step 8 – Apply mascara and/or eyelashes. I don’t use lashes when I am just experimenting with a look, only for a night out.

Step 9 – Voila! Tidy up any fall out and do any extra blending and there you have it. A look fit for my mermaid friends (yes some of my friends are mermaids, you know who you are ❤ )

Image

Image

To complete the mermaid look I applied a NARS soft touch shadow pencil in Dark Rite to my lips. This takes it from Ariel to Ursula. Who is way more of a badass.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and scare my neighbours. Ursula OUT x
