How to rock black lipstick

photo 1 (9)

Khloe Kardashian posted this picture of herself earlier rocking black lipstick, and it got me thinking about all the other celebrities who have worn black lipstick and looked great doing it.

You don’t need to be any kind of famous to work this look, however. Lime Crime have a gorgeous matte black in their Velvetines collection ($20)

velvetine-blackvelvet_1_2 blackvelvet-lipswatch

The colour is called Black Velvet, and the gloss wand makes it really easy to apply.

The trick with black lipstick, and with any dark lip colour, is to have Q-tips and concealer on stand-by for clean ups. A dark colour is very unforgiving with errors. With a light colour the edges aren’t so defined or noticeable, but with black your edges have to be crisp. Which is why is it important to go round the lips with concealer and a decent brush after you have applied the colour.

With a bottom heavy makeup look like this, it helps to balance it out with bold brows. But with your eyes, anything goes. Whether you want to stick with just a simple cat eyeliner or go for a more sultry smokey eye, you can get away with either of these with a black lip. And if in doubt, just think: what would Rihanna do?

Types of eyeliner looks

Eyeliner is literally a pencil or brush, like any other, used to create art. Makeup is art. The proof is in these pictures of all the different ways you can do your eyeliner:

photo 1 (8) photo 2 (7) photo 3 (5)

Whether its a classic cat-eye or a simple flick, eyeliner can drastically change the shape and look of your eyes. My favourite is the arabic look. Lining all the way round my eyes accentuates their almond shape. I always like a long exaggerated flick to make my eyes look extra feline. These pictures are great for offering up some inspiration if you are bored with your go-to look. Subtlety isn’t always best when it comes to liner. EXTRAVAGANZAAA

DIY Makeup Tips from Prison!

I am a HUGE Orange is the New Black fan. HUGE. That show gives me life. I am counting the days till series 3. So inspired by one of my favourite shows, I thought I’d compile a list of real beauty tips from ex-inmates.

2527254

Eyeliner is apparently available in commissary, however it is one of the more expensive items. So inmates have to get creative.

orange-new-black-season-3-spoilers

Although not necessarily with a sharpie…

Some inmates heat the ends of coloured pencils by soaking them in hot water and then apply as they would a normal kohl liner.

Just like in the show, Kool-Aid can come in handy.

a2215a99178284bcb19f79df4aaf6071

Mixed with vaseline, Kool-Aid can make a substitute lip and cheek stain. In fact you can even use it to dye your hair, but it won’t do it’s condition any good. For lip gloss, some inmates prefer the more subtle colours that Crystal Light provide.

As mentioned in the show, coffee grounds really can be used as eyeshadow. Just mix with a bit of water and dab it on your lids. Applying vaseline to the lids first acts as a primer. And thats not all coffee can do! Add coffee to face cream or moisturiser for a homemade foundation…apparently.

LornaPromo3I love Morello!

Another alternative for a darker lip stain is to harness the natural staining power of cherries and beets. Dwight Schrute eat your heart out!

And my favourite tip of all: Literally rub the T-Mobile advert in the newspaper on your cheeks. According to inmate Annie Burchard, its the perfect pink!

I hope none of you ever need these tips, but if you do at least you won’t have to worry about how you’re going to keep yourself looking fabulous!

Backstage at the Victoria’s Secret After Party 2014

Last night, after the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show, the Angels made a quick change and headed to an exclusive after party (apparently tickets for civilians cost £11,000). These are some of my favourite beauty looks from the evening:

The Pony Club

I love a sleek ponytail and these girls were representing last night:

photo 2 (1) photo 3 (1)Adriana Lima and Doutzen Kroes

While Adriana went for the slightly more old school high pony, Doutzen opted for the chic nape of the neck tie. Both looked very high glam, but Adriana’s was ‘party till 8am’ whilst Doutzen’s was more ‘going to the Oscars’.

The Bob

photo 1 (1)

Jourdan Dunn looked fun and flirty with a feline flick of her eyeliner and the very fashionable long bob. Its a youthful look that was perfect for her.

Miscellaneous

photo 1 (2)

I love the brown lipstick Magdalena Frackowiak is wearing. A modern take on the 90s look.

photo 2 (2)

Devon Windsor was a knockout with her shock of platinum hair and sixties lashes with nude lips.

Just goes to show, these girls look gorgeous off the catwalk as well as on.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Makeup

In honour of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in London tonight, I thought I’d do a VS makeup look. Their girls always look so glowy and the makeup is really easy to copy.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 photo 4

The cheeks are very bronzed and glowy, with a natural pink gloss on the lips and gold and bronze eyeshadows on the eyes. They also use a lot of shimmer including under the eyes and on the cupids bow of the lips.

This is the look I did:

photo 3 (4)photo 2 (4)

For the base I used a radiance primer (Laura Mercier) and then YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat foundation mixed with a bit of NARS highlighter in Copacabana. This just adds more glow.

photo 3 (3)

On the eyes, I used Half Baked from the Urban Decay Naked palette for the gold all over the lid, then for the outer corner I used a bronze shadow from a NARS palette. I just did a thin line of gel eyeliner. Under the lower lashes I applied pressed power highlighter and lined the water line with a white pencil. I added dots of kohl liner on the lash line and then applied Clinique mascara. Of course, the Angels wear at least one pair of lashes, but I am currently out of falsies so I had to make do with my own lashes. In the corner of my eyes, just by the tear ducts, I applied a bit of highlighter. This gives a more wide awake look to the eyes.

photo 2 (3)

For the lips, I first of all lined them with a Chanel lip pencil in Natural and then went over them with Benefit lipgloss in Who Are You Wearing. I added a dab of shimmery highlighter to the cupids bow. This makes them seem fuller.

I finished off the look with some MORE highlighter, applied to the cheekbones and temples: Mac’s skinfinish in Superb. I finally added the blusher, Aglow by Clinique. This is a peachy/tan blusher which matches the colour favoured by the Angels.

photo 4 (2)

I love this look because its simple enough for daytime but its still glam and pretty. Perfect for school or work.

My favourite YouTube Beauty Gurus

I don’t watch many makeup videos on YouTube tbh, but when I do, its one of these guys.

First up is my girl Camila Coelho. Her English channel is MakeUpByCamila2. She is Brazilian so most of her videos are in Portuguese but she does separate ones for her English speaking fans. My favourite of her tutorials is the Valentine’s Day look

maxresdefault

Next is Huda Kattan. A beauty blogger based in Dubai who posts killer makeup and beauty tips. My favourite video is her Lipliner Tutorial where she goes over the basics any girl needs if she want to learn the secrets of overlining (alla Kylie Jenner)

Fullscreen-capture-13072014-162424.bmp-e1405327478731

I learnt most of my makeup skills from drag queens, so its no surprise that my favourite makeup tutorials are by drag queens such as Vivienne Pinay, Miss Fame and Fendi Laken

ViviennePinay09_zps880a10c0

Of course, if you aren’t a drag queen you can skip a lot of the stages in the videos, and you don’t have to be as exaggerated with your makeup, but they are a really good source of tips and inspiration.

Happy YouTubing!

The Best Beauty Moments of the AMAs 2014

I was not ready for the high levels of peng that were at last night’s AMAs.

First off, lets talk about Fergie coming out of nowhere and blowing us all away!

Fergie (1) Fergie (2)

That hair colour looks gorgeous on her and with all the long bobs around these days, it’s nice to see someone representing the long hair. Her soft natural makeup looks great with her loose waves. Surprising how such a natural look can be such a knockout, but it just works.

J Lo (as always) looked fantastic.

Jennifer-Lopez (1)

I love the sleeked back wet look hair, because it’s very easy to do with greasy hair (which mine always is). You can just tell people it’s product. The eyeshadow under her lower lash line is smoked out to perfection and she’s rocking some killer Louboutin nails (when the underside of the nails are painted red)

Jordin Sparks

jordin-sparks-american-music-awards-2014-amasJordin-Sparks

BAM! Look at that glam, Studio 54 hair. Jordin looked great channeling 1970s Diana Ross.

The Jenner Faction

photo 1 photo 2

Both of the Jenner sisters looked great. Kendall went for a sleek long bob while Kylie contrasted with her signature blue hair in a messy bun. Their makeup was by Rob Scheppy and for Kylie he used:

Makeup Forever Palette foundation set in Medium Beige with Translucent Natural Powder

Charlotte Tilbury FilmStar Highlight and Contour

Eyeko Lash Wardrobe Black Magic Mascara and Eyeko Brow Liner and Brow Gel

And the one we all want to know about; Mac Lip Liner in Burgandy with Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Lip Balm over the top.

For Kendall he used all Estee Lauder products, because Kendall is now the face of Estee Lauder:

The foundation was Bare Creme

Ivory Powder on the eyes

Star Pink lipgloss

Lovers Blush on the cheeks.

They looked beautiful.

Jhene Aiko posted this picture of her getting ready:

photo 3

Of course she’s already a stunningly beautiful woman, so obviously she looks great, but I particularly like her grecian plait with the curls.

I’m normally not a fan of Rita Ora‘s makeup, personally I don’t like really dark eyebrows with blonde hair, but she did look nice last night:

Rita-Ora (1)

Her makeup looked a lot less severe than usual, because she opted for a more natural lip colour, and her spidery lashes actually go with her spider earrings! That wasn’t shade, spider lashes are having a moment.

And finally, Selena Gomez

Selena-Gomezselena-gomez-american-music-awards-2014-amas-2

Selena looked so chic on the red carpet. Her smooth centre-parted chignon with the burgundy lipstick made her look mature and elegant.

So that’s the AMAs for another year. Now it’s just waiting for the Golden Globes and then, my favourite night because I’m a film nerd, The Oscars!

AmfAR Gala 2014 Beauty Roundup

The annual amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) Gala is a black tie event thrown to raise money for the foundation and awareness of AIDS/HIV. Many celebrities attend and often it is a time for headline grabbing outfits, as this gets the foundation even more attention in the press. Celebrities are often criticised for their daring outfits but it is all to draw attention to the foundation and the good work it does.

This year the headlines were mainly about Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. This post with similarly be mainly about Rihanna as she looked, as always, fan-bloody-tastic.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 (2)

That makeup. Come on. Flawless!

giphy giphy (1)

She has the perfect 80s orange lipstick to match her skin tone and her eye makeup, which is a burnt orange colour. All this makes her green eyes pop, and the chronic lashes for days add glamour.

The Hair

photo 3 photo 4 (2)

I LOVE the sleek ponytail look. It’s something I do a lot to instantly solve a bad hair day and it’s really easy to recreate. They look great with a centre or a side parting. Rihanna is rocking hers with a side parting which adds a bit of retro glamour to her look.

Next up, Miley’s makeup was actually really cute:

photo 4

The feline flick eye liner complimented her pixie crop and works really well with her elfin features. I would like to see this look on her more often,.

Lea Michelle looked FIRE

photo 1 (1) photo 4 (1)

Lea Michelle has the best beauty team. She always steals the show for me on the red carpet. I love the brown smokey eye, it works so well with her chocolate brown eyes and caramel highlights. Her hair is big and beautiful, and even though I don’t think the bronzer is the right colour for her, it does match her highlights.

Alessandra Ambrosio

photo 2 (1) photo 1 (2)

Another example of a great sleek ponytail, this time with a centre parting. When you have an intricate dress and makeup, it is always best to go for simple and elegant hair. This ponytail works perfectly for that purpose.

Kelly Osbourne

photo 2 (2)

I like this makeup because it reminds me of one of my staple looks. I often like to go for an edgier bold liner with that barbie pink shade of lipstick. It works really well with Kelly’s unique style and it’s very youthful. I used to use the Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick but as it’s limited edition and mines running low, a look-a-like is Mac’s Saint Germain (£15.50).

M3LNC0

I can’t wait to see what these guys do for Halloween tonight!

Paris Fashion Week SS15 Beauty Roundup

The last of the fashion weeks are over, and the summary for spring/summer 2015 is…well you’ll have to read this post and find out.

The beauty highlights from Paris are:

The Mermaid

photo 1John Paul Gaultier

Sleep in your braids! The easy way to achieve this look.

photo 2 (2)Jacquemus

This one’s even easier to copy. Although not to be taken literally. I don’t think the hair stylist actually wants people to be walking around with wet hair. I think (hope) it’s just a nod towards the mermaid trend.

Jewel Tones

photo 2Elie Saab photo 4 Guy Larochephoto 4 (1)Balmain photo 2 (1)Alexis Mabille

Teal, purple (called it!) and gold. Seems like it’s all about the richly coloured eye shadows. To recreate the teal look, I recommend Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Liner in Junkie (£15). The Glide On liners come in 39 colours and anyone who has ever used their blacker than black Perversion liner can testify to their pigmentation and long wear-ability.

Neon Brows (again)

photo 1 (2)Christine Phung

This might be too much as an everyday look for some, but it’s a fun look for a party. You don’t have to use bleach or dye.You can just draw over them with the Urban Decay liners I mentioned, or with an angle brush and an eyeshadow. For thicker darker eyebrows you may need to go over them with a concealer first, before applying the colour.

And remember, ALWAYS USE A PRIMER

or your eyeshadow will look like this…

5 Great Drug Store Brands

1. Batiste

Batiste-dry-shampoo

As in the dry shampoo. I have tried some of the most expensive, high-end dry shampoos out there, and none compare to the cheap and cheerful Batiste range. My hair gets greasy almost 12 hourly. But because I want my hair to be healthy, I try not to wash it everyday. Which means dry shampoo is a staple in my beauty regime. (£2.99)

2. Eco Tools

images (1)

Get the Gloss recently did a study into the best foundation brushes and the Eco Tools Bamboo Foundation Brush (£7.99) made the cut with a 9 out of 10 score! Despite it’s low price, it didn’t shed and was great for blending. So now we know, great makeup brushes under £10 DO exist.

3. Nyx

BeBold_NewWebsite

Nyx Cosmetics have a wide range of products from every kind of makeup to tools, to nail polishes. They even sponsored RuPaul’s Drag Race a bunch of times. Their hero product is their Matte Lipsticks (£6) and they also do a Soft Matte Lip Cream (£5.50), which applies like a gloss but dries matte.

4. ELF

71614_100_pc_marble_eyeshadow_palette_XL

Eyes Lips Face (or ELF) are an online stockist with drugstore prices. In fact, less than drugstore prices. When they started, their attracting gimmick was all their products were £1.50. That is still their baseline price, but for some larger palettes or kits, prices are a little higher. You can get an 100 (!) eyeshadows palette for £15. Which is roughly the price of one Mac eyeshadow.

5. Sleek

50390649-1_4

Sleek are an underrated high street brand, best known for their NARS dupe blushers. For just £4.49 these 11 shades offer quite a good imitation of the famous NARS blushers. They obviously aren’t as good NARS, but for a quarter of the price they are more than worth the money. Priced at twice as much, they’d still be a good buy.
