How to cover acne with makeup

Having suffered from acne in varying degrees of seriousness over the past ten years, I undertand how important makeup can be. With the right foundation routine, you can achieve the semblance of perfect skin, at least temporarily. That’s a big deal when you have acne.

How to cover up cystic acne

This makeup tutorial takes you through one girls routine in covering up her cystic acne. It’s informative, helpful and relatable. If you are struggling with the nightmare that is acne, I recommend this video. You are not alone in your struggle.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Makeup

In honour of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in London tonight, I thought I’d do a VS makeup look. Their girls always look so glowy and the makeup is really easy to copy.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 photo 4

The cheeks are very bronzed and glowy, with a natural pink gloss on the lips and gold and bronze eyeshadows on the eyes. They also use a lot of shimmer including under the eyes and on the cupids bow of the lips.

This is the look I did:

photo 3 (4)photo 2 (4)

For the base I used a radiance primer (Laura Mercier) and then YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat foundation mixed with a bit of NARS highlighter in Copacabana. This just adds more glow.

photo 3 (3)

On the eyes, I used Half Baked from the Urban Decay Naked palette for the gold all over the lid, then for the outer corner I used a bronze shadow from a NARS palette. I just did a thin line of gel eyeliner. Under the lower lashes I applied pressed power highlighter and lined the water line with a white pencil. I added dots of kohl liner on the lash line and then applied Clinique mascara. Of course, the Angels wear at least one pair of lashes, but I am currently out of falsies so I had to make do with my own lashes. In the corner of my eyes, just by the tear ducts, I applied a bit of highlighter. This gives a more wide awake look to the eyes.

photo 2 (3)

For the lips, I first of all lined them with a Chanel lip pencil in Natural and then went over them with Benefit lipgloss in Who Are You Wearing. I added a dab of shimmery highlighter to the cupids bow. This makes them seem fuller.

I finished off the look with some MORE highlighter, applied to the cheekbones and temples: Mac’s skinfinish in Superb. I finally added the blusher, Aglow by Clinique. This is a peachy/tan blusher which matches the colour favoured by the Angels.

photo 4 (2)

I love this look because its simple enough for daytime but its still glam and pretty. Perfect for school or work.

My favourite YouTube Beauty Gurus

I don’t watch many makeup videos on YouTube tbh, but when I do, its one of these guys.

First up is my girl Camila Coelho. Her English channel is MakeUpByCamila2. She is Brazilian so most of her videos are in Portuguese but she does separate ones for her English speaking fans. My favourite of her tutorials is the Valentine’s Day look

maxresdefault

Next is Huda Kattan. A beauty blogger based in Dubai who posts killer makeup and beauty tips. My favourite video is her Lipliner Tutorial where she goes over the basics any girl needs if she want to learn the secrets of overlining (alla Kylie Jenner)

I learnt most of my makeup skills from drag queens, so its no surprise that my favourite makeup tutorials are by drag queens such as Vivienne Pinay, Miss Fame and Fendi Laken

ViviennePinay09_zps880a10c0

Of course, if you aren’t a drag queen you can skip a lot of the stages in the videos, and you don’t have to be as exaggerated with your makeup, but they are a really good source of tips and inspiration.

Happy YouTubing!

The Best Beauty Moments of the AMAs 2014

I was not ready for the high levels of peng that were at last night’s AMAs.

First off, lets talk about Fergie coming out of nowhere and blowing us all away!

Fergie (1) Fergie (2)

That hair colour looks gorgeous on her and with all the long bobs around these days, it’s nice to see someone representing the long hair. Her soft natural makeup looks great with her loose waves. Surprising how such a natural look can be such a knockout, but it just works.

J Lo (as always) looked fantastic.

Jennifer-Lopez (1)

I love the sleeked back wet look hair, because it’s very easy to do with greasy hair (which mine always is). You can just tell people it’s product. The eyeshadow under her lower lash line is smoked out to perfection and she’s rocking some killer Louboutin nails (when the underside of the nails are painted red)

Jordin Sparks

jordin-sparks-american-music-awards-2014-amasJordin-Sparks

BAM! Look at that glam, Studio 54 hair. Jordin looked great channeling 1970s Diana Ross.

The Jenner Faction

photo 1 photo 2

Both of the Jenner sisters looked great. Kendall went for a sleek long bob while Kylie contrasted with her signature blue hair in a messy bun. Their makeup was by Rob Scheppy and for Kylie he used:

Makeup Forever Palette foundation set in Medium Beige with Translucent Natural Powder

Charlotte Tilbury FilmStar Highlight and Contour

Eyeko Lash Wardrobe Black Magic Mascara and Eyeko Brow Liner and Brow Gel

And the one we all want to know about; Mac Lip Liner in Burgandy with Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Lip Balm over the top.

For Kendall he used all Estee Lauder products, because Kendall is now the face of Estee Lauder:

The foundation was Bare Creme

Ivory Powder on the eyes

Star Pink lipgloss

Lovers Blush on the cheeks.

They looked beautiful.

Jhene Aiko posted this picture of her getting ready:

photo 3

Of course she’s already a stunningly beautiful woman, so obviously she looks great, but I particularly like her grecian plait with the curls.

I’m normally not a fan of Rita Ora‘s makeup, personally I don’t like really dark eyebrows with blonde hair, but she did look nice last night:

Rita-Ora (1)

Her makeup looked a lot less severe than usual, because she opted for a more natural lip colour, and her spidery lashes actually go with her spider earrings! That wasn’t shade, spider lashes are having a moment.

And finally, Selena Gomez

Selena-Gomezselena-gomez-american-music-awards-2014-amas-2

Selena looked so chic on the red carpet. Her smooth centre-parted chignon with the burgundy lipstick made her look mature and elegant.

So that’s the AMAs for another year. Now it’s just waiting for the Golden Globes and then, my favourite night because I’m a film nerd, The Oscars!

DIY: Make your own makeup!

For those of you who like to live a chemical and harm free life, and are tired of trying to get hold of the various vegan makeup brands, or if you’re just on a budget, why not make your own makeup?

I found this cool infographic (at http://www.northwestpharmacy.com/healthperch/ditch-the-chemicals/) with all the steps you need:

AmfAR Gala 2014 Beauty Roundup

The annual amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) Gala is a black tie event thrown to raise money for the foundation and awareness of AIDS/HIV. Many celebrities attend and often it is a time for headline grabbing outfits, as this gets the foundation even more attention in the press. Celebrities are often criticised for their daring outfits but it is all to draw attention to the foundation and the good work it does.

This year the headlines were mainly about Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. This post with similarly be mainly about Rihanna as she looked, as always, fan-bloody-tastic.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 (2)

That makeup. Come on. Flawless!

giphy giphy (1)

She has the perfect 80s orange lipstick to match her skin tone and her eye makeup, which is a burnt orange colour. All this makes her green eyes pop, and the chronic lashes for days add glamour.

The Hair

photo 3 photo 4 (2)

I LOVE the sleek ponytail look. It’s something I do a lot to instantly solve a bad hair day and it’s really easy to recreate. They look great with a centre or a side parting. Rihanna is rocking hers with a side parting which adds a bit of retro glamour to her look.

Next up, Miley’s makeup was actually really cute:

photo 4

The feline flick eye liner complimented her pixie crop and works really well with her elfin features. I would like to see this look on her more often,.

Lea Michelle looked FIRE

photo 1 (1) photo 4 (1)

Lea Michelle has the best beauty team. She always steals the show for me on the red carpet. I love the brown smokey eye, it works so well with her chocolate brown eyes and caramel highlights. Her hair is big and beautiful, and even though I don’t think the bronzer is the right colour for her, it does match her highlights.

Alessandra Ambrosio

photo 2 (1) photo 1 (2)

Another example of a great sleek ponytail, this time with a centre parting. When you have an intricate dress and makeup, it is always best to go for simple and elegant hair. This ponytail works perfectly for that purpose.

Kelly Osbourne

photo 2 (2)

I like this makeup because it reminds me of one of my staple looks. I often like to go for an edgier bold liner with that barbie pink shade of lipstick. It works really well with Kelly’s unique style and it’s very youthful. I used to use the Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick but as it’s limited edition and mines running low, a look-a-like is Mac’s Saint Germain (£15.50).

I can’t wait to see what these guys do for Halloween tonight!

Paris Fashion Week SS15 Beauty Roundup

The last of the fashion weeks are over, and the summary for spring/summer 2015 is…well you’ll have to read this post and find out.

The beauty highlights from Paris are:

The Mermaid

photo 1John Paul Gaultier

Sleep in your braids! The easy way to achieve this look.

photo 2 (2)Jacquemus

This one’s even easier to copy. Although not to be taken literally. I don’t think the hair stylist actually wants people to be walking around with wet hair. I think (hope) it’s just a nod towards the mermaid trend.

Jewel Tones

photo 2Elie Saab photo 4 Guy Larochephoto 4 (1)Balmain photo 2 (1)Alexis Mabille

Teal, purple (called it!) and gold. Seems like it’s all about the richly coloured eye shadows. To recreate the teal look, I recommend Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Liner in Junkie (£15). The Glide On liners come in 39 colours and anyone who has ever used their blacker than black Perversion liner can testify to their pigmentation and long wear-ability.

Neon Brows (again)

photo 1 (2)Christine Phung

This might be too much as an everyday look for some, but it’s a fun look for a party. You don’t have to use bleach or dye.You can just draw over them with the Urban Decay liners I mentioned, or with an angle brush and an eyeshadow. For thicker darker eyebrows you may need to go over them with a concealer first, before applying the colour.

And remember, ALWAYS USE A PRIMER

or your eyeshadow will look like this…

Milan Fashion Week SS15 Beauty Roundup

Some more familiar looks from NYFW popped up at Milan, reinforcing the coming beauty trends. And one unique look that stole the show for me. But first, the confirmed trends:

Side Parting

photo 1 (2)Just Cavalli

As seen at New York and London, it looks like the side parting is here to stay. Square faced girls everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief

Warrior Braids

photo 2 (2)Giorgio Armani

Just like at New York. This look is so Mother of Dragons. To recreate, section off your hair into three parts and dutch braid each part, coming together at the back of your hair for a ponytail or bun. Or keep braiding each section to the end for a more edgy look.

photo (2)

Doll Lashes

photo 4 (1)Costume National

photo (3)

Another repeat. I can see why. It’s easy to recreate and it’s pretty.

Graphic Liner

photo 1

This is a simple one to copy, with a decent gel liner. I use Mac’s Fluidline in Blacktrack (£15.50) and the best brush I’ve found is the Bobbi Brown gel liner brush (£18). Experiment with different looks and shapes, and if you mess up, just pretend it was on purpose.

Simple Glam

photo 2 (1)Dolce and Gabbana

D&G really won it with this simplistic, old Italy glam look. Similar to the Burberry look at LFW, the wine stained lips look classy and they have added a cat eye flick which makes it more of an evening look than Burberry’s bare eyes.

photo 3 (1)Pucci

That’s Pucci, Not Poochie

To recreate this look, try sleeping in plaits. If you don’t have 12 hours, plait your hair and then go over the plaits with a straightener. When you take the plaits out you should have gorgeous Cersei Lannister beach waves.

Now for my favourite beauty look from all of MFW, Moschino‘s Barbie Girls!

photo 1 (1) photo 3 photo 4 photo

This look is so pretty and wearable and it reminds me of me circa 2011. I lived for the Barbie lips and was never seen without my Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick. That was limited edition, but some great alternatives are Pink Nouveau and Saint Germain from Mac (£15.50)

M3EW48 M3LNC0

My guess for Paris is more side partings, doll lashes and maybe some purple eyeshadows. Let’s hope we don’t get any more garage doors though…

NO!

LFW SS15 Beauty Roundup

I’d just like to start this post on London Fashion week with a couple of looks from the last day of NYFW

Firstly, some bright brows from Badgley Mischka

photo 1

This look also appeared at LFW at the Vivienne Westwood show

photo 1 (1)

I really like these alternative brow colours, although it probably won’t take off as an everyday look. It reminds me of model Charlie Barker circa 2013

photo

Only for the brave!

And then there was my new favourite beauty look from NYFW, at The Blonds show:

photo 2 photo 3 photo 4

I love this look because like me, it’s a bit chola, a bit ratchet and a LOT fabulous. The gold is everything. I love the idea of overlaying the liner with gold glitter and that big hair piece is TO DIE.

Ok, so back to London. I actually saw some very keen looking photogs outside the JW Anderson show trying to get a shot of someone famous, while I was on my way to the National Portrait Gallery. There weren’t as many beauty looks that I was excited about as at NYFW, but here are the highlights.

So side partings continued to be a trend, as demonstrated at Jean-Pierre Braganza

photo 2 (1)JPB

Very Coach. I think a side parting is so flattering and also great if you’re hiding roots.

Another trend we saw at NYFW that made an appearing in London is the purple eyeshadow:

photo 1 (2)Matthew Williamson

I like this look more and more each time I see it. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of the purple eyeshadow.

Burberry went for classic British elegance:

photo 3 (1)

The slightly darker red lip with minimal eye makeup is a really easy way to transition into fall makeup and looks classy while still being easy to recreate. A Mac lipstick in Ruby Woo or Russian Red (£15.50) would be a great match to this colour.

M0N904

The Grunge look was revived at Tom Ford

photo 2 (2)

Models sported a smudged out smokey eye with bare lips, giving the semblance of as little effort as possible having gone into the look. Which is cool. Looking like you’ve tried too hard never earns the ‘cool’ label. Recreate the eyes with a smudgable kohl eyeliner, like Rimmel’s Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil if you’re on a budget (£2.99) or Mac’s Eye Kohl (£14) if you feel like splurging.

Now let’s see what beauty bombshells Milan drops…

Emmys 2014 Beauty Roundup

Last night, the 66th Primetime Emmy awards, saw the coming together of some of Televisions biggest stars (even if they did forget about Broad City). I could fill a whole separate blog talking about the shows, winners and nominees (I am TV’s biggest fan) but I’ll just stick to my favourite hair and makeup looks of the night.

10. Edie Falco

photo 2 (2)

I thought Edie looked gorgeous last night. Her tan perfectly complimented her sunkissed highlights, and she kept it glam with some fluttery lashes and a nude lip. Very Flattering.

9. Mayim Bialik

photo 1 (2)

I love this grecian hair on Blossom – I mean Amy – I mean Mayim!

8. Mindy Kaling

photo 1

Even though The Mindy Project didn’t receive any nominations, Mindy still won in terms of beauty. The sixties beehive hair (always shiny) plus blushing pink cheeks and smokey eyes equal one beautiful Mindy.

7. Christine Baranski

photo 2 (1)

My personal favourite star of The Good Wife looked chic and classy last night. Her signature hair was as always coiffed to perfection and her makeup is glam but understated.

6. Christina Hendricks

photo 1 (1)

I love this boho hair with the sheer blushed lips and coppery smokey eyes. Nothing could look better with her hair and skin tone. She looks beautiful.

5. Julie Bowen

photo 4 (2)

Peng. I really like this edgy version of the classic bob. It looks fierce with her smokey eyes.

4. Keke Palmer

photo 3 (1) photo 4 (1)

Keke’s hair and makeup is ON. POINT. I love the double nose piercings and the sleek long ponytail, plus the smokey cat eye to top it all off.

3. Kerry Washington

rs_634x1024-140825194237-634.kerry.cm.82514 rs_634x1024-140825161045-634-kerry-washington-emmy.ls.82514

This ombre grown out bob is everything! And who would have thought matte denim blue eyeshadow would go so well with an orange dress? I need to find out what eyeshadow her makeup artist used.

2. Sarah Hyland

photo 3 (2)

My beauty winner. The simple hair donut looks gorgeous with Haley’s blonde highlights. Plus we can see all of her beautiful face. Her eyebrows look full without looking fake, her lashes and golden brown eyeshadow on the upper outer corner of her lids accentuate her hazel eyes and her lipstick is the perfect ‘Kylie Jenner’ shade. This is my favourite look of the entire evening, bar one..

1. Bryan Cranston’s Moustache
