Cute things to do with short hair

Pixie cuts and bobs are all kinds of cute. They look great all on their own, without any styling or adornments. But if you do want to do something different with yours, you have almost as many options as those with longer hair.

You will need plenty of bobby pins and hairspray for the following.

First of all, you could pin it all up in a faux updo with bobby pins. Just tousle and curl it first and then twist and pin till you get the desired effect.

image

Faux-Hawks are another great look that is actually easier to achieve with short hair. Back comb and hairspray the top section and then pin it in place.

Try a simple side braid at the front.

If you don’t know how to French braid, follow this pictorial.

For a look that appears complicated but is actually incredibly simple, try either the double twist, or the triple twist.

Or finally, wrap your hair up in a gorgeous silk scarf!

With these ideas, you’ll have all your long-haired friends desperate for the chop.

Cute Short Hairstyles

If you were reading my previous post about hair growth and thinking “what if we don’t want to grow our hair? Short hair is cute too!” then you are absolutely right. In fact short hair is incredibly in fashion right now with lots of celebs opting for shorter looks. Here are some of my favourite short hairstyles:

The Long Bob

photo 2 (3) photo 3 (2)

This is the look of the moment. The grown-out bob. Its easy to achieve, low maintenance, and it looks great. If you are just experimenting with going short, this would be a great way to transition.

The Classic Bob

photo 1 (4)

This is your standard bob. A classic for a reason, this hairstyle is versatile and youthful. Slightly more work to style than the long bob, though.

The Pixie Crop

photo 1 (3) photo 2 (4)

J Law and Kaley Cuoco both went full pixie earlier this year and it WORKED! I love Penny’s new hair and think it suits her personality much more. Its edgy and untraditional, just like these two. It is a lot of maintenance to style, and it usually only works with delicate elfin features (that definitely rules me out) but if you can carry it off, its worth it.

Over the winter you may be wanting to keep as much of your hair as possible, for warmth, but these are great ‘do’s’ to try when it starts to get warmer. Flowing locks aren’t your only option.

Trend Alert: Grey Ombre Hair

Last night/tonight (depending on your time zone) was/is the Diamond Ball. Rihanna made her appearance sporting a gorgeous new hair do:

photo 1 (5) photo 2 (5)

Its a grey ombre look, and its not the first time we’ve seen it.

Kylie Jenner rocked the grey ombre a few months ago:

photo 3 (3)photo 4 (2)

I love it! Its a great way to spice up black hair. In fact I am considering dying my hair black just so I can try this look.

The Best Beauty Moments of the AMAs 2014

I was not ready for the high levels of peng that were at last night’s AMAs.

First off, lets talk about Fergie coming out of nowhere and blowing us all away!

Fergie (1) Fergie (2)

That hair colour looks gorgeous on her and with all the long bobs around these days, it’s nice to see someone representing the long hair. Her soft natural makeup looks great with her loose waves. Surprising how such a natural look can be such a knockout, but it just works.

J Lo (as always) looked fantastic.

Jennifer-Lopez (1)

I love the sleeked back wet look hair, because it’s very easy to do with greasy hair (which mine always is). You can just tell people it’s product. The eyeshadow under her lower lash line is smoked out to perfection and she’s rocking some killer Louboutin nails (when the underside of the nails are painted red)

Jordin Sparks

jordin-sparks-american-music-awards-2014-amasJordin-Sparks

BAM! Look at that glam, Studio 54 hair. Jordin looked great channeling 1970s Diana Ross.

The Jenner Faction

photo 1 photo 2

Both of the Jenner sisters looked great. Kendall went for a sleek long bob while Kylie contrasted with her signature blue hair in a messy bun. Their makeup was by Rob Scheppy and for Kylie he used:

Makeup Forever Palette foundation set in Medium Beige with Translucent Natural Powder

Charlotte Tilbury FilmStar Highlight and Contour

Eyeko Lash Wardrobe Black Magic Mascara and Eyeko Brow Liner and Brow Gel

And the one we all want to know about; Mac Lip Liner in Burgandy with Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Lip Balm over the top.

For Kendall he used all Estee Lauder products, because Kendall is now the face of Estee Lauder:

The foundation was Bare Creme

Ivory Powder on the eyes

Star Pink lipgloss

Lovers Blush on the cheeks.

They looked beautiful.

Jhene Aiko posted this picture of her getting ready:

photo 3

Of course she’s already a stunningly beautiful woman, so obviously she looks great, but I particularly like her grecian plait with the curls.

I’m normally not a fan of Rita Ora‘s makeup, personally I don’t like really dark eyebrows with blonde hair, but she did look nice last night:

Rita-Ora (1)

Her makeup looked a lot less severe than usual, because she opted for a more natural lip colour, and her spidery lashes actually go with her spider earrings! That wasn’t shade, spider lashes are having a moment.

And finally, Selena Gomez

Selena-Gomezselena-gomez-american-music-awards-2014-amas-2

Selena looked so chic on the red carpet. Her smooth centre-parted chignon with the burgundy lipstick made her look mature and elegant.

So that’s the AMAs for another year. Now it’s just waiting for the Golden Globes and then, my favourite night because I’m a film nerd, The Oscars!

AmfAR Gala 2014 Beauty Roundup

The annual amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) Gala is a black tie event thrown to raise money for the foundation and awareness of AIDS/HIV. Many celebrities attend and often it is a time for headline grabbing outfits, as this gets the foundation even more attention in the press. Celebrities are often criticised for their daring outfits but it is all to draw attention to the foundation and the good work it does.

This year the headlines were mainly about Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. This post with similarly be mainly about Rihanna as she looked, as always, fan-bloody-tastic.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 (2)

That makeup. Come on. Flawless!

giphy giphy (1)

She has the perfect 80s orange lipstick to match her skin tone and her eye makeup, which is a burnt orange colour. All this makes her green eyes pop, and the chronic lashes for days add glamour.

The Hair

photo 3 photo 4 (2)

I LOVE the sleek ponytail look. It’s something I do a lot to instantly solve a bad hair day and it’s really easy to recreate. They look great with a centre or a side parting. Rihanna is rocking hers with a side parting which adds a bit of retro glamour to her look.

Next up, Miley’s makeup was actually really cute:

photo 4

The feline flick eye liner complimented her pixie crop and works really well with her elfin features. I would like to see this look on her more often,.

Lea Michelle looked FIRE

photo 1 (1) photo 4 (1)

Lea Michelle has the best beauty team. She always steals the show for me on the red carpet. I love the brown smokey eye, it works so well with her chocolate brown eyes and caramel highlights. Her hair is big and beautiful, and even though I don’t think the bronzer is the right colour for her, it does match her highlights.

Alessandra Ambrosio

photo 2 (1) photo 1 (2)

Another example of a great sleek ponytail, this time with a centre parting. When you have an intricate dress and makeup, it is always best to go for simple and elegant hair. This ponytail works perfectly for that purpose.

Kelly Osbourne

photo 2 (2)

I like this makeup because it reminds me of one of my staple looks. I often like to go for an edgier bold liner with that barbie pink shade of lipstick. It works really well with Kelly’s unique style and it’s very youthful. I used to use the Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick but as it’s limited edition and mines running low, a look-a-like is Mac’s Saint Germain (£15.50).

M3LNC0

I can’t wait to see what these guys do for Halloween tonight!

Milan Fashion Week SS15 Beauty Roundup

Some more familiar looks from NYFW popped up at Milan, reinforcing the coming beauty trends. And one unique look that stole the show for me. But first, the confirmed trends:

Side Parting

photo 1 (2)Just Cavalli

As seen at New York and London, it looks like the side parting is here to stay. Square faced girls everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief

Warrior Braids

photo 2 (2)Giorgio Armani

Just like at New York. This look is so Mother of Dragons. To recreate, section off your hair into three parts and dutch braid each part, coming together at the back of your hair for a ponytail or bun. Or keep braiding each section to the end for a more edgy look.

photo (2)

Doll Lashes

photo 4 (1)Costume National

photo (3)

Another repeat. I can see why. It’s easy to recreate and it’s pretty.

Graphic Liner

photo 1

This is a simple one to copy, with a decent gel liner. I use Mac’s Fluidline in Blacktrack (£15.50) and the best brush I’ve found is the Bobbi Brown gel liner brush (£18). Experiment with different looks and shapes, and if you mess up, just pretend it was on purpose.

Simple Glam

photo 2 (1)Dolce and Gabbana

D&G really won it with this simplistic, old Italy glam look. Similar to the Burberry look at LFW, the wine stained lips look classy and they have added a cat eye flick which makes it more of an evening look than Burberry’s bare eyes.

photo 3 (1)Pucci

That’s Pucci, Not Poochie

To recreate this look, try sleeping in plaits. If you don’t have 12 hours, plait your hair and then go over the plaits with a straightener. When you take the plaits out you should have gorgeous Cersei Lannister beach waves.

Now for my favourite beauty look from all of MFW, Moschino‘s Barbie Girls!

photo 1 (1) photo 3 photo 4 photo

This look is so pretty and wearable and it reminds me of me circa 2011. I lived for the Barbie lips and was never seen without my Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick. That was limited edition, but some great alternatives are Pink Nouveau and Saint Germain from Mac (£15.50)

M3EW48 M3LNC0

My guess for Paris is more side partings, doll lashes and maybe some purple eyeshadows. Let’s hope we don’t get any more garage doors though…

Back to school/Off to uni

buffy-college

A new school year, or a brand new university, is the perfect opportunity for a beauty makeover. My school was incredibly strict and we weren’t allowed to wear makeup, dye our hair, or even fake tan. We also had to keep our hair tied back. The rules relaxed a little in 6th form, but my first chance for a real beauty makeover was university. So whether you are just being released from the tight grip of school rules, or you go to a school where you are allowed to express yourself through your appearance, here are some great tips for becoming the new You 2.0.

Tan

Not everyone looks best with a tan, there are some lucky people who really pull off the alabaster skin look. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. When my tan fades I just look like a jaundiced Lord Voldemort. So having a tan is a great confidence booster for me and a great way to start the school or uni year looking healthy and glowing, like you spent the summer on a yacht instead of watching hundreds of hours of netflix (which is what I actually did).

If you are not a fan of actual tanning, why not fake it with something that comes pretty close to the real thing.

My favourite fake tan is Xen-Tan

Xen_Tan_Dark_Lotion_Absolute_Luxe_Weekly_Self_Tan_with_Scent_Secure_236ml_1405938071

This Dark Lotion Absolute Luxe is currently £25.24 in the feelunique.com sale and it is the one I use. It’s the darkest they do, but they also have a medium and fair range to suit all skin types. What I love about this tan is it has olive undertones, instead of orange. Like, for real, it comes out green. You apply the guide colour onto freshly exfoliated skin and leave it overnight. Wash off in the morning and you are left with the perfect tan.

If this isn’t dark enough, you can top it up with something cheaper, like St Moritz (£4.49 on feelunique.com)

St_Moriz_Instant_Self_Tanning_Lotion___Dark_200ml_1386586345_main

Yes, it’s very cheap so it doesn’t have great lasting power, it’s more of a wash off tan. But it goes on super dark and I used to apply this just minutes before going out, on top of my original tan. Even though it is cheap it is not orange. It comes out as a mahogany brown foam, and it stays mahogany brown on your skin.

TIP: to make your tan last longer, moisturise. Do not moisturise before applying your tan or it won’t absorb as well, but moisturising is crucial for retaining a tan, real or fake.

Hair

Heat stimulates hair growth, which is why your hair grows more over summer. The sun also can lighten your hair. I am naturally brunette, but I died my hair blonde for uni, and kept it up until about a year ago. I loved being blonde but it killed my hair. But a few highlights are always flattering. Dark hair doesn’t suit me, and when I first started highlighting my hair I got so many more compliments. So why not try some honey or caramel toned highlights?

Nails

Ghetto-Nails-With-Gold-Color-Decoration

I would never have been allowed any kind of nails when I was at school. Neither was I allowed when I was nursing. It was so liberating when I stopped nursing just to be able to have the longest, most ratchet nails possible. I love a stiletto nail, a squareletto nail or even a simple square. So if your school allows nails, or if you are headed to the freedom of uni, why not treat yourself to a manicure before you go. You could stick with your natural nails with a cute gel polish, alla Kardashian

Or go more gangsta with it, like Lil Debbie

or Kylie Jenner:

Whatever you choose, you will feel pretty much ready for anything with your new look. Good luck in the new school/uni year!

Emmys 2014 Beauty Roundup

Last night, the 66th Primetime Emmy awards, saw the coming together of some of Televisions biggest stars (even if they did forget about Broad City). I could fill a whole separate blog talking about the shows, winners and nominees (I am TV’s biggest fan) but I’ll just stick to my favourite hair and makeup looks of the night.

10. Edie Falco

photo 2 (2)

I thought Edie looked gorgeous last night. Her tan perfectly complimented her sunkissed highlights, and she kept it glam with some fluttery lashes and a nude lip. Very Flattering.

9. Mayim Bialik

photo 1 (2)

I love this grecian hair on Blossom – I mean Amy – I mean Mayim!

8. Mindy Kaling

photo 1

Even though The Mindy Project didn’t receive any nominations, Mindy still won in terms of beauty. The sixties beehive hair (always shiny) plus blushing pink cheeks and smokey eyes equal one beautiful Mindy.

7. Christine Baranski

photo 2 (1)

My personal favourite star of The Good Wife looked chic and classy last night. Her signature hair was as always coiffed to perfection and her makeup is glam but understated.

6. Christina Hendricks

photo 1 (1)

I love this boho hair with the sheer blushed lips and coppery smokey eyes. Nothing could look better with her hair and skin tone. She looks beautiful.

5. Julie Bowen

photo 4 (2)

Peng. I really like this edgy version of the classic bob. It looks fierce with her smokey eyes.

4. Keke Palmer

photo 3 (1) photo 4 (1)

Keke’s hair and makeup is ON. POINT. I love the double nose piercings and the sleek long ponytail, plus the smokey cat eye to top it all off.

3. Kerry Washington

rs_634x1024-140825194237-634.kerry.cm.82514 rs_634x1024-140825161045-634-kerry-washington-emmy.ls.82514

This ombre grown out bob is everything! And who would have thought matte denim blue eyeshadow would go so well with an orange dress? I need to find out what eyeshadow her makeup artist used.

2. Sarah Hyland

photo 3 (2)

My beauty winner. The simple hair donut looks gorgeous with Haley’s blonde highlights. Plus we can see all of her beautiful face. Her eyebrows look full without looking fake, her lashes and golden brown eyeshadow on the upper outer corner of her lids accentuate her hazel eyes and her lipstick is the perfect ‘Kylie Jenner’ shade. This is my favourite look of the entire evening, bar one..

VMAs 2014 Beauty Roundup

Last night/this morning (depending on what part of the ,world you’re in) it was the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, nicknamed by Beyoncé fans as the BeyMAs. And you can see why, with her 17 minute performance and teary award acceptance. But enough people are talking about Bey today, so I’m going to focus on the other stars of last night. The BEAUTY stars.

The Ageless Beauties

JLo

photo 3 (3)

Lets be serious, JLo never misses a beat when it comes to looking knock out gorgeous. So it’s no surprise she’s on this list. I love the purple smokey eyes with pink lipstick and a glowing cheekbone. And with the complexity of her dress, she is keeping it simple with her hair. It works.

Gwen Stefani

photo 1 (3) photo 4

I think it’s fair to say these women look even better now than they did in the noughties. Gwen looks great matching her lips to her outfit and with her signature blonde hair. Of course, she has one of the most perfect faces of all time so I don’t think it is possible for her to look bad.

The Model Chicks

Jourdan Dunn

photo 1 (1)

That wig though. Such a cute style.

Chanel Iman

photo 2 (1) photo 4 (2)

Again, a beauty rocking some shorter locks. Is this going to be the new trend? And Chanel is giving us her signature smokey eyes and barely there lips. I’m not disappointed.

Ireland Baldwin

photo 3 (2) photo 2 (2)

I couldn’t find any close up pictures of Ireland’s makeup last night, but these two shots really capture her glow. She is also sporting a full pair of top lashes, sixties style. Again, Ireland is one of those girls who always look stunning, makeup or no makeup.

The Talent

Iggy Azalea

photo 1 photo 3 (1)

BAM! That’s the sound of Iggy knocking us all out with her body-ody-ody. I love this hair on her, and with all her natural beauty all she relied on was a pair of fluttery lashes and let her beauty speak for itself

Holland Roden

photo 3

I don’t even know who this girl is except that she is some kind of actress, but this look blew me away. Her coppery brown smokey eye with her natural matte lips perfectly compliment her hair and skin tone. This girl got it 100% right.

‘Other’

Kylie Jenner

photo 2

Kylie’s many makeup artists always get it right. Whether those lips are surgically enhanced or it’s just the effects of a good lip liner, she looks stunning. Her hair is in her usual bob, and her lips are a slightly darker shade of her normal nude, and from the neck up she looks fantastic.

‘Muva’ Rosebud (aka Amber Rose)

photo 1 (2)

Her dress may have been a little controversial, but she kept it simple and classy with the face.

photo 4 (1)

A nice glow, some pink lips and cheeks and a couple of sets of eyelashes. Can’t go wrong. Let’s hope it was nice and warm in Hollywood last night.

So those are my beauty favourites of last night. Join me tomorrow to discuss the Emmy’s!

Half a Top Knot

Continuing the theme of 90s hairstyles that have come back in fashion, I present the half top knot:

8653a7656d19cb5fad71262cca4ff786 bee1dcbc89882fafa3f617e492e127df

All the cool kids are doing it. It’s pretty simple too:

1. Brush your hair and take the top section of hair that you want to tie and brush out all the knots

2. Tie it into a ponytail

3. Like with the space buns, twist the ponytail and wrap it round the base.

4. Secure with another tie and pin any unruly bits.

It looks great on these cool kids, however whenever I try it, it looks really unflattering. I know the point of the hairstyle isn’t to look ‘pretty’ but sometimes a girl wants to. So for a much more flattering look, albeit less 90s and more 60s, just do steps 1 and 2.

ArianaGrande21

khloe-kardashian-odom-hair

Less ‘trendy’ but way more flattering and pretty.

Once you’ve followed steps 1 and 2, make sure the ponytail is secured high up with lots of volume and then just back comb the hell out of the rest of your hair for a classic pretty 60s look. Have a play around and see which style suits you best 🙂
