Great Etsy beauty finds you (probably) had no idea existed

Etsy is a treasure trove of handmade and vintage items. It is more than just crafts and vintage clothes. There at thousands, even tens of thousands, of beauty shops. Because it is all handmade, almost everything out there is organic and vegan friendly. You will find things on Etsy you would never see in shops, some for good reason, but mostly items are original pieces made with love.

For an exhaustive range of sparkly nail polishes, the Vegas based shop ILoveNP has got you covered.

At around £6.82 each, they’re slightly more expensive than a drug store brand, but in which drug stores would you find this colour?

image

Etsy classic, Portland Black Lipstick Company, does exactly what it says on the tin. Great black lipstick for just £9.54. But they also have a range of other similarly ‘alternative’ colours. Their namesake, however, is their best seller.

For just £4.77! Turn your bathroom into a mini bakery.

If price isn’t an object, For Strange Women has a delightfully gothic selection of vintage style perfumes in both solid and liquid form, in beautiful packaging. However the cheapest perfumes start at around £35, or you could spend around £100 on solid perfume necklaces.

Finally, Fat and the Moon is a cosmetics company that has natural beauty products from deodorants to lipsticks.

This lip and cheek stain is just £8.18 and will have you going from zero to vamp in 3.5.

So if you are looking for gifts this holiday season, or just want to treat yourself, don’t forget to make Etsy one of your stops before heading out to the shops. You may be pleasantly surprised.

The evolution of the eyebrow

From Ancient Greece, to modern day, the eyebrow has undergone quite a lot of changes. Some of the trends are cyclical, some (hopefully) are one offs. But it’s definitely safe to say that eyebrows are not just a modern day obsession.

In Ancient Greece, the unibrow was king

image image

The 1920s saw the arrival of the pencil thin curved brow

image image

By the 1940s some sense had been recovered thanks to the gorgeous arches of stars like Lauren Bacall

image

This trend has remained as a staple ever since. However there have been variations. For example the bushy brows of the 1980s

image image

They went super thin again in the 90s.

image

Which brings us to the defined, albeit slightly over made up, arches of today.

image image

But when done properly, they can look pretty peng.

What’s next for the eyebrow?

Best Celebrity Fringes 2014/15

Bangs are a great and easy way to update a tired hairstyle. Unfortunately, they don’t always work. Sometimes, however, you get lucky and your new fringe looks great. Here are some celebrities who got lucky and look great with a fringe.

Zendaya’s hottest beauty looks

Zendaya is one of the coolest people on the planet hands down. Everything she does is just 👌🏼

And that includes her makeup. These are, in my opinion, her best looks.

Those brown smokey eyes with the matte brown lips and perfect eyebrows.

Pink lips with subtle brown eyeshadow and just a hint of pink blush.

And lastly, my favourite…

Expiration dates on makeup

We all know what a bummer it is, when your makeup collection is worth thousands, and then some magazine reminds you that it will be out of date in 6 months and you should throw it all away and start over. That just isn’t going to happen. If I’ve spent money on an item of makeup, I’m going to use it until it runs out. However here is a list of makeup products and when you should stop using them.

image

Mascara: 2-3 months

Nail varnish: 1-2 years

image

Liquid foundation: 6-12 months

Perfume: 8-10 years

image

Lipstick: 2 years (1 year for lipgloss)

Lotion: 2 years

image

Eyeshadow and other powders: 2 years.

So what happens if you don’t obey these rules? Well with any product you use on your eyes, there is a greater risk of infection. With foundation, more breakouts. But if you take good care of your makeup, don’t share it, store it properly and clean your brushes regularly, you might be able to keep using it for longer. Use your good judgement, and if in doubt, don’t put it near your eyes.

My Top 5 Stars who always have the best makeup

Celebrities, with their personal glam squads, are constantly giving us makeup envy. They can inspire our beauty looks. We all have our personal favourites, but these are my Top 5, in no particular order.

Nicki Minaj

image

She has winged liner for dayyys. Her looks are always on point.

Ciara

image

When Ciara does wear makeup, she keeps it very minimal. Its gorgeous and easy to recreate.

image

And in her free time she doesn’t wear any makeup at all, which is my favourite look to copy.

Rihanna

image

Her eyeshadows are always a beautiful array of nudes, browns and golds. And great winged liner.

Kehlani

image

Winged liner, winged liner, winged liner.

Amber Rose

Although we rarely see Muva without her signature sunglasses, we know underneath she is rocking that winged liner.

As you may have guessed, I like winged liner.

Which parting works best for your face shape?

It is a common dilemma. Many different partings, which way will suit you? We’ve worked out which glasses to get, but now we have to decide how to part our hair, or whether or not to get bangs. I say wear your hair how you want. However, if you want to know which way is the most flattering, here are the ‘rules’.

For around face shape, a deep side part will add length to your face.

image

For a square face shape, a side parting is best, but not too deep. Just off centre is the most flattering.

imageimage

A heart shaped face looks best with a centre parting, or side swept bangs

imageimage

A centre parting or bangs works best with a long face

imageimage

And if you have an oval shaped face, you’re lucky. You can wear you hair in any parting you like and always look great.

imageimageimageimage

These ‘rules’ however, are made to be broken. So if you have a round face, for example, and want to rock a centre parting, go for it. With enough confidence you can carry off any look.

Best eyeshadow for your eye colour

Using a colour wheel, you can find out (or internet people can do it for you) which colours best compliment your eye colour. I am most familiar with the best colours for brown eyes (brown, olive green, purple), but this is a really helpful diagram courtesy of alldaychic.com to help you figure out which colours will makes your eyes ‘pop’.

image

Some people say you cannot wear the same colour shadow as your eye colour, but this proves that wrong. Most places you look will recommend brown eyeshadow for brown eyes and blue eyeshadow for blue eyes. Again, I can only speak for brown eyes, but the purple thing is LEGIT. When wearing purple eyeshadow I have been asked if I was wearing coloured contacts. That only happened one time but I’m still pretty proud of it.

Usually gold is the most recommended colour for blue eyes, but I think blue eyes look really great with a grey smokey eye look. Even though its not in this diagram, I think brown eyeshadow really works with green eyes, too.

Basically, wear any colour you want, but if you want to make your eyes look a deeper brown, a brighter blue or a more dazzling green, follow this advice.

PEACE x

Ruby Rose’s Hottest Makeup Looks

Ruby Rose is fast becoming a household name after her appearance in Orange is the New Black. To some, however, she has been known for a while for her androgynous beauty.

I have compiled a list of my favourite Ruby Rose makeup looks so all of my followers who are unfamiliar with her, can appreciate the flawlessness that is Ruby Rose.

image

This kohl lined/smudged brown eyeshadow smokey eye look appears a lot on Ruby’s instagram page. And you can see why. Its makeup that looks great whilst still looking effortless and andro-chic. As you will see it can be paired with any lip, such as this nude/brown…

image

Or this baby pink.

image

This more intense glam look adds some extra liquid liner and some lashes with a darker, brighter hot pink lip.

image

With these statement lips, the only eye makeup necessary is a bit of mascara, which Ruby totally rocks.

But my favourite makeup look of Ruby’s by far is…

image

No makeup.

Philip Treacy x Mac

Legendary milliner Philip Treacy is branching out into makeup with this latest collaboration with Mac:

FullSizeRender (6)

I love it when Mac collaborators actually use colour, and this 12 piece collection looks like it will deliver futuristic, out-of-this-world colour.

philip+treacy+mac

Three great lipstick colours, pressed pigments and the most exciting part: the sea green and blue fluidline gel liners. Its a relief to see a collection that is different from Mac’s already huge range. Often Mac will release a collaboration and it is exactly the same as so many of Mac’s regular products, but in fancy limited edition packaging.  But I predict this line will sell out in minutes.

Philip Treacy x Mac is out in April.
