Celebrities who won Halloween 2014

Halloween is one of my favourite spectator sports.I love watching the costumes roll in on Instagram, and last year the celebs pulled out all the stops. This year there weren’t as many makeup related costumes so I have included a few civilians that did a great job with Halloween makeup.

First up, a great Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) costume by Padma Lakshmi and Susan Sarandon.

photo 1 photo 2 (1)

These skulls are a very popular makeup look on Halloween, but Padma and Susan also went all out with traditional Day of the Dead costumes. It looked very cool.

Amber Rose’s birthday is near Halloween so she often has a joint birthday/halloween party that a lot of celebs attend, and she loves costumes that involve face-changing makeup. This is her as a zombie bride this year:

photo 2

The blood is a really nice touch.

Attending her party was Carmen Electra dressed as a chola

photo 1 (1)

As you know I’ve done this look before, it is a lot of fun to recreate. I particularly like the tattoos.

As expected, my favourite drag queen Sharon Needles looked gore-ific this year:

photo 1

She dressed as a chic Julia from Hellraiser. Terrifying.

A triple whammy from Demi Lovato, J Lo and Iggy Azalea:

photo 1 (2)

Demi payed homage to one of comedy’s greats, Lucille Ball. J Lo just looked hot, and Iggy shot back at the haters by dressing as one of the White Chicks to which she is often compared. No better way to stop people laughing at you than by laughing at yourself. I admire her sense of humour.

I hoped somebody would be Maleficent because it is a great makeup look, and Giuliana Rancic did not disappoint:

photo 3 (1)

Those cheekbones though.

At first I was a bit disappointed by Rihanna’s costume, I expected something outrageous, but her Ninja Turtle was actually pretty cool:

photo 2 (1) photo 3

She looks good in green!

And finally, the person whose costume the world always looks forward to, Heidi Klum:

photo 3 (2) photo 4 (2)

Dressed, in amazing detail, as a butterfly. The makeup on this is insane! Truly transformative. It must have been a fun job to have.

And now some civilians.

Nail Artist @Kandiyamz did some very cute cat makeup:

photo 4 (1)

Nail art must translate pretty well into Makeup art. My favourite part about this look is the ombre lip, and the leopard dots of course.

This makeup look from instagram account @missasheed made me do a double take:

photo 4

Gross, but brilliant.

And this girl @katturnerwashere won the whole of Halloween for me, dressed as Laura Palmer:

photo 3

Amazing. So morbid. So good.

And even though this costume didn’t involve makeup, I have to mention the amazing likeness of this man who dressed as Buster Bluth from Arrested Development:

Who did I dress as? Why, Buffy of course!

Happy Halloween!

AmfAR Gala 2014 Beauty Roundup

The annual amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) Gala is a black tie event thrown to raise money for the foundation and awareness of AIDS/HIV. Many celebrities attend and often it is a time for headline grabbing outfits, as this gets the foundation even more attention in the press. Celebrities are often criticised for their daring outfits but it is all to draw attention to the foundation and the good work it does.

This year the headlines were mainly about Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. This post with similarly be mainly about Rihanna as she looked, as always, fan-bloody-tastic.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 (2)

That makeup. Come on. Flawless!

giphy giphy (1)

She has the perfect 80s orange lipstick to match her skin tone and her eye makeup, which is a burnt orange colour. All this makes her green eyes pop, and the chronic lashes for days add glamour.

The Hair

photo 3 photo 4 (2)

I LOVE the sleek ponytail look. It’s something I do a lot to instantly solve a bad hair day and it’s really easy to recreate. They look great with a centre or a side parting. Rihanna is rocking hers with a side parting which adds a bit of retro glamour to her look.

Next up, Miley’s makeup was actually really cute:

photo 4

The feline flick eye liner complimented her pixie crop and works really well with her elfin features. I would like to see this look on her more often,.

Lea Michelle looked FIRE

photo 1 (1) photo 4 (1)

Lea Michelle has the best beauty team. She always steals the show for me on the red carpet. I love the brown smokey eye, it works so well with her chocolate brown eyes and caramel highlights. Her hair is big and beautiful, and even though I don’t think the bronzer is the right colour for her, it does match her highlights.

Alessandra Ambrosio

photo 2 (1) photo 1 (2)

Another example of a great sleek ponytail, this time with a centre parting. When you have an intricate dress and makeup, it is always best to go for simple and elegant hair. This ponytail works perfectly for that purpose.

Kelly Osbourne

photo 2 (2)

I like this makeup because it reminds me of one of my staple looks. I often like to go for an edgier bold liner with that barbie pink shade of lipstick. It works really well with Kelly’s unique style and it’s very youthful. I used to use the Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick but as it’s limited edition and mines running low, a look-a-like is Mac’s Saint Germain (£15.50).

M3LNC0

I can’t wait to see what these guys do for Halloween tonight!

Magnifibres VS Talc

These days it’s all about fibre mascaras that build on your natural lashes. There are plenty of products on the market that promise to deliver an extra swish to your blink, such as Fast Lash by Japonesque (£15) and Younique 3D Fiber[sic] Lashes ($29, seems to be an Avon type deal where there are individual sellers, yet to find a UK seller).

One of the first products to do this was Magnifibres Brush on False Lashes (£15.80 on beautybay.com. This price has gone up, when I first bought this product it was £10). I haven’t tried the other products, but I do own the Magnifibres and it does work. It will build your lashes noticeably however it also gives them a spidery look. Not just a spidery look, but a hairy spidery look. Like a tarantula. Some people like this look, some don’t. I personally am scared of spiders, although I do appreciate their beauty.

xproduct.png.pagespeed.ic.IqOre2PKgf

It’s basically like applying cotton candy to your lashes and painting over it. I stopped using it because it seemed to always make me feel like I had bits of it in my eyes. It wasn’t particularly comfortable to wear. I have read lots of beauty ‘hacks’ saying that you can use talcum powder to achieve the same effect as these products. So I put this to the test.

photo 1 (3)The left side (as you look at it) is talcum powder, the right side is with Magnifibres.

The eye where I just used talcum powder is a lot more clumped together. I looks like I have exactly 4 eyelashes. It was also quite hard to apply the talcum powder to the lashes. I used a q tip and brushed it only the lashes, however not much of the powder stuck.

The Magnifibres eye is not much better, but it is probably the way I applied it.

photo 2 (3)Top: Magnifibres. Bottom: Talc

Overall, the Magnifibres did work better, as you would expect. But if applied better, the talc might work. It seemed to tangle up my lashes so it made them look worse than if I had just used mascara on it’s own, but again that could just be my own incompetence. Let me know if you have tried this and got on better than I did.

Emmys 2014 Beauty Roundup

Last night, the 66th Primetime Emmy awards, saw the coming together of some of Televisions biggest stars (even if they did forget about Broad City). I could fill a whole separate blog talking about the shows, winners and nominees (I am TV’s biggest fan) but I’ll just stick to my favourite hair and makeup looks of the night.

10. Edie Falco

photo 2 (2)

I thought Edie looked gorgeous last night. Her tan perfectly complimented her sunkissed highlights, and she kept it glam with some fluttery lashes and a nude lip. Very Flattering.

9. Mayim Bialik

photo 1 (2)

I love this grecian hair on Blossom – I mean Amy – I mean Mayim!

8. Mindy Kaling

photo 1

Even though The Mindy Project didn’t receive any nominations, Mindy still won in terms of beauty. The sixties beehive hair (always shiny) plus blushing pink cheeks and smokey eyes equal one beautiful Mindy.

7. Christine Baranski

photo 2 (1)

My personal favourite star of The Good Wife looked chic and classy last night. Her signature hair was as always coiffed to perfection and her makeup is glam but understated.

6. Christina Hendricks

photo 1 (1)

I love this boho hair with the sheer blushed lips and coppery smokey eyes. Nothing could look better with her hair and skin tone. She looks beautiful.

5. Julie Bowen

photo 4 (2)

Peng. I really like this edgy version of the classic bob. It looks fierce with her smokey eyes.

4. Keke Palmer

photo 3 (1) photo 4 (1)

Keke’s hair and makeup is ON. POINT. I love the double nose piercings and the sleek long ponytail, plus the smokey cat eye to top it all off.

3. Kerry Washington

rs_634x1024-140825194237-634.kerry.cm.82514 rs_634x1024-140825161045-634-kerry-washington-emmy.ls.82514

This ombre grown out bob is everything! And who would have thought matte denim blue eyeshadow would go so well with an orange dress? I need to find out what eyeshadow her makeup artist used.

2. Sarah Hyland

photo 3 (2)

My beauty winner. The simple hair donut looks gorgeous with Haley’s blonde highlights. Plus we can see all of her beautiful face. Her eyebrows look full without looking fake, her lashes and golden brown eyeshadow on the upper outer corner of her lids accentuate her hazel eyes and her lipstick is the perfect ‘Kylie Jenner’ shade. This is my favourite look of the entire evening, bar one..

VMAs 2014 Beauty Roundup

Last night/this morning (depending on what part of the ,world you’re in) it was the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, nicknamed by Beyoncé fans as the BeyMAs. And you can see why, with her 17 minute performance and teary award acceptance. But enough people are talking about Bey today, so I’m going to focus on the other stars of last night. The BEAUTY stars.

The Ageless Beauties

JLo

photo 3 (3)

Lets be serious, JLo never misses a beat when it comes to looking knock out gorgeous. So it’s no surprise she’s on this list. I love the purple smokey eyes with pink lipstick and a glowing cheekbone. And with the complexity of her dress, she is keeping it simple with her hair. It works.

Gwen Stefani

photo 1 (3) photo 4

I think it’s fair to say these women look even better now than they did in the noughties. Gwen looks great matching her lips to her outfit and with her signature blonde hair. Of course, she has one of the most perfect faces of all time so I don’t think it is possible for her to look bad.

The Model Chicks

Jourdan Dunn

photo 1 (1)

That wig though. Such a cute style.

Chanel Iman

photo 2 (1) photo 4 (2)

Again, a beauty rocking some shorter locks. Is this going to be the new trend? And Chanel is giving us her signature smokey eyes and barely there lips. I’m not disappointed.

Ireland Baldwin

photo 3 (2) photo 2 (2)

I couldn’t find any close up pictures of Ireland’s makeup last night, but these two shots really capture her glow. She is also sporting a full pair of top lashes, sixties style. Again, Ireland is one of those girls who always look stunning, makeup or no makeup.

The Talent

Iggy Azalea

photo 1 photo 3 (1)

BAM! That’s the sound of Iggy knocking us all out with her body-ody-ody. I love this hair on her, and with all her natural beauty all she relied on was a pair of fluttery lashes and let her beauty speak for itself

Holland Roden

photo 3

I don’t even know who this girl is except that she is some kind of actress, but this look blew me away. Her coppery brown smokey eye with her natural matte lips perfectly compliment her hair and skin tone. This girl got it 100% right.

‘Other’

Kylie Jenner

photo 2

Kylie’s many makeup artists always get it right. Whether those lips are surgically enhanced or it’s just the effects of a good lip liner, she looks stunning. Her hair is in her usual bob, and her lips are a slightly darker shade of her normal nude, and from the neck up she looks fantastic.

‘Muva’ Rosebud (aka Amber Rose)

photo 1 (2)

Her dress may have been a little controversial, but she kept it simple and classy with the face.

photo 4 (1)

A nice glow, some pink lips and cheeks and a couple of sets of eyelashes. Can’t go wrong. Let’s hope it was nice and warm in Hollywood last night.

So those are my beauty favourites of last night. Join me tomorrow to discuss the Emmy’s!

Clinique Haul

Clinique have currently got some great products on the go, some new and some classic. After a recent splurge there, I thought I’d share with you some of the great products I copped that I’m really excited about.

Firstly, their High Impact Curling Mascara in Black

photo 2

After a recent post about my favourite mascaras a friend told me Clinique mascara was her favourite. I had never tried any Clinique makeup before, but now I have tried this mascara I think I am a convert. I just tried it without curling my eyelashes and the specially designed wand really gripped the natural curve of my lash line so they looked great after one coat.

The most exciting product of this haul is the Almost Lipstick

photo 3

It looks scary but it doesn’t actually appear on the lips as that colour. It is very sheer and is designed to enhance your natural lip colour. To quote clinique “When pure pigment merges with the unique, natural tone of your lips, you’ve met your match” . This product looks different on everyone, so it really gives you your own unique colour.

photo 1(Top: Clinique Curling Mascara. Bottom: Almost Lipstick)

I also got a powder blush in the colour ‘aglow’. It is peach toned so now that my tan is fading it won’t look so good, but the product itself is highly pigmented with a shimmer.

photo 4 photo 5

The pictures do not do justice to the glow.

If you buy any two Clinique products right now you get all these free, plus some more face goos. Or you can buy them individually at retail price (Mascara: £18, Lipstick: £17.50, Blush: £22)

Using Face Charts

Lots of makeup artists use face charts to create looks or to make sure they don’t forget a look when inspiration strikes them. One of the most famous examples are the MAC makeup charts that are available to browse in the store. It is a great exhibition of talent, and the best proof that makeup artistry is a real, and sometimes breathtaking, art. Using a face chart is just transferring the canvas from a living one, to paper.

A great example of this kind of talent is one of my favourite MUAs @kilprity:

photo 2 (10) photo 1 (10)

These charts are done using real makeup products. However that isn’t the only option. If you are just experimenting with colours, or want to see what something will look like, you can always use coloured pencils instead. Some makeup products work better on paper than others. Powders, for example. But creams and liquids don’t work. Also using brushes on paper can ruin them.

For inspiration, search the hashtag #facechart on instagram for an amazing display of talent. (I always use instagram instead of Google images, because most makeup artists post on instagram).

And the best part is, with this hack you won’t need to pay for a pad of face charts. Just print this picture!

MAC face chart

This is the basic Mac template. It is the most recognizable face of face chart. Does it remind anyone else of Angelina Jolie?
