What colour eyebrow pencil should you be using?

In a society obsessed with eyebrows, it can seem like having the perfect brows is the most important thing in the world. Its not. But it can be a nice bonus. If you are blessed with naturally good eyebrows, finding the right eyebrow pencil is as simple as just matching it to your brow colour. But if, like me, your natural brows are almost nonexistent, you have to start with practically a blank canvas.

There are two basic rules for eyebrow colour.

  • If you have light hair, select a colour one or two shades darker than your hair colour
  • If you have dark hair, select a colour one or two shades lighter than your hair colour

Its that simple.

For example, when I was blonde I used Mac’s eyebrow pencil in Lingering

M1EF06

I went two shades darker than my blonde hair.

photo 2 (10)

And now my hair is mostly brown, I can use the same shade of pencil because it is one shade lighter than my current hair colour!

So that worked out pretty well.

And remember, these are just guidelines. If you want blue eyebrows, have blue eyebrows. Its only eyebrows.

Types of eyeliner looks

Eyeliner is literally a pencil or brush, like any other, used to create art. Makeup is art. The proof is in these pictures of all the different ways you can do your eyeliner:

photo 1 (8) photo 2 (7) photo 3 (5)

Whether its a classic cat-eye or a simple flick, eyeliner can drastically change the shape and look of your eyes. My favourite is the arabic look. Lining all the way round my eyes accentuates their almond shape. I always like a long exaggerated flick to make my eyes look extra feline. These pictures are great for offering up some inspiration if you are bored with your go-to look. Subtlety isn’t always best when it comes to liner. EXTRAVAGANZAAA

How knowing the Parent Company of a brand can save you money

Parent companies are the companies at the top of the brand food chain. Most of the beauty brands we know and love have a parent company. The brand ‘family’ are all the brands owned by one particular company. These are important to know because most of these parent companies own both high end and budget beauty brands. But the parent company has the same research facilities and products available to the whole brand family. For example the same company that owns Giorgio Armani Beauty, also owns Maybelline. This means that Maybelline have the same resources available to them as the much more expensive Giorgio Armani. So despite the major difference in price, these brands are essentially of the same quality. Below is a list of parent companies and their brand families.

Estee Lauder: Estee Lauder, Aramis, American Beauty, Aveda, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Bumble & Bumble, Darphin, Prescriptives, M.A.C. Cosmetics, Jo Malone, Origins, Ojon, Flirt, GoodSkin Labs, Creme de la Mer, Tom Ford, Smashbox

NARS Roman Holiday Review

You may remember a few weeks back I posted an article about great Christmas present ideas, in which I mentioned the NARS Roman Holiday collection. Well, my parents bought me it for my birthday! I was so excited, I wore everything in there.

First up, the Nails:

photo (3)Roman Holiday Nail Varnish (featuring cat)

This comes out as a pinky/purpley/shimmery mauve.

photo 3 (7)

Its a subtle, sophisticated pink, perfect for evenings or just when you want to look fancy.

The Lipstick is a gorgeous barbie pink, without being too fluorescent, and the same goes for the blusher:

photo 1 (7) photo 2 (8)

The pictures aren’t great. The first one is a snapchat in a pub and in the second one I’m not wearing the lipstick, but they looked cute I promise. I received many a compliment.

I always think pink is a flattering colour on everyone, because its not too harsh and it softens the features. Therefore I recommend this set to everyone! When in Rome(an Holiday)..

NARS Lip Pencil Review

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas or non denominational winter holiday. I received these from my brother:

photo 1 (6)

These are five great colours consisting of 3 Satin looks and 2 matte looks.

First up is this festive dark red, Cruella (matte)

photo 2 (7)

Going lighter and a bit more orange toned, Iberico (matte)

photo 2 (6)

Then theres a classic winter Future, Yu

photo 1 (5)

And two nudes, Descanso

and Torres Del Paine

photo 3 (6)

These pencils are great for accuracy. They wear like a lipstick but with the accuracy of a liner and no where near as drying. The satin finish gives a bit of a sheen, whilst still being highly pigmented. They are by no means sheer. And the mattes also manage the nearly impossible feat of looking matte without drying your lips. They’re comfy enough to wear all day and they are food proof, meaning the colour withstands a good meal.

I love these pencils and highly recommend them to anyone who wants a lipstick and liner in one.

What shape are your eyes?

Came across this helpful video that shows you how to work out your eye shape:

Yes, its made by Smashbox and they want you to buy their palette that tells you the best eyeshadow looks for your eye shape, but obviously there are literally millions of tutorials out there that tell you how to do makeup for your specific eye shape. But they’re useless unless you know what shape your eyes are in the first place! So I hope this helps you to work it out.

Clinique Haul

Clinique have currently got some great products on the go, some new and some classic. After a recent splurge there, I thought I’d share with you some of the great products I copped that I’m really excited about.

Firstly, their High Impact Curling Mascara in Black

photo 2

After a recent post about my favourite mascaras a friend told me Clinique mascara was her favourite. I had never tried any Clinique makeup before, but now I have tried this mascara I think I am a convert. I just tried it without curling my eyelashes and the specially designed wand really gripped the natural curve of my lash line so they looked great after one coat.

The most exciting product of this haul is the Almost Lipstick

photo 3

It looks scary but it doesn’t actually appear on the lips as that colour. It is very sheer and is designed to enhance your natural lip colour. To quote clinique “When pure pigment merges with the unique, natural tone of your lips, you’ve met your match” . This product looks different on everyone, so it really gives you your own unique colour.

I also got a powder blush in the colour ‘aglow’. It is peach toned so now that my tan is fading it won’t look so good, but the product itself is highly pigmented with a shimmer.

The pictures do not do justice to the glow.

If you buy any two Clinique products right now you get all these free, plus some more face goos. Or you can buy them individually at retail price (Mascara: £18, Lipstick: £17.50, Blush: £22)

The Big Debate: Applying makeup in public.

Since the Queen was spotted re applying her lipstick at the Commonwealth games, it has re-sparked the public grooming debate.

gtg-make-up-maniac

I love this picture, because if you ask me, The Queen is the be all and end all of etiquette, and if she thinks it’s ok, it’s ok, okay? Debate over! As long as it doesn’t involve bodily fluids or depilation I don’t see the harm in a bit of touching up on the go. People would have you believe that the difference of opinion on this matter is generational, which could be a legit argument (my dad certainly does not approve when he sees girls applying their makeup on the tube on their way to work) but the Queen is certainly of a different generation to myself and she clearly approves.

If you ask me, the ability to apply perfect liquid liner on the tube deserves to be applauded, not frowned on. Makeup is not a secret, so why must we hide our makeup regimes like it is something to be ashamed of? If we don’t wear it, we get just as judged. But if we wear it with pride, that’s a problem too? No. If I am on a long train journey, for example, and I want to brush my hair and make sure my lipstick is perfect before I arrive at my destination, I refuse to be shunned to the train toilets to do it.

drew-barrymore-on-the-tube-applying-concealer-drew-barrymore-shows-you-how-to-apply-makeup-on-the-tube-beauty-bag-handbag

And if a girl chooses that extra 15 minutes in bed in the morning because she decided she will do her makeup on the tube, that’s just good sense. My dad tried to explain why he didn’t like it, and drew the comparison that it is like a man shaving on the tube. But shaving is not the male equivalent of applying makeup. Applying makeup is hygienic and doesn’t leave stubble all over the person next to you. The truth is, it doesn’t hurt anyone, you will never see those people again, and if people don’t like it they can look away or read their neighbour’s paper.

Makeup is not our secret shame. It is our war paint. And our days of hiding it are over! Get used to it, world.

Look of the Month: Tennis Girlfriends

I don’t like to bunch these group of girls together with the term ‘TWAGS’ (Tennis wives and girlfriends) because they are individuals and shouldn’t just be known as so-and-so’s girlfriend. That being said…they are all absolutely gorgeous and have the natural, low maintenance but expensive, fresh off the yacht look. So for someone who doesn’t like to wear too much makeup in the summer, it’s a great look.

First up, Kim Sears.

Kim+Sears+First+Round+Matches+Wimbledon+89q3YSBdx0fx

This Hair idol is a very talented artist with a degree in English Literature, who also happens to be the girlfriend of reigning Wimbledon champion, Andy Murray. Her beautiful light honey brunette locks have inspired a nation, however unfortunately for most of us, it’s probably just lucky genetics but a mortal could always just try a good professional blow dry, using a setting spray. Being the go to reaction shot during any Andy Murray match, there is a lot of pressure on her to represent for her boy, and I think she does a fantastic job.

Jelena Ristic is the beautiful fiancée  of Tennis don, Novak Djokovic. She is a ‘digital marketing, branding and communications consultant’ (whatever than means), a sometime model, and director of the Novak Djokovic foundation. She is also pregnant, so congratulations! She is stunningly gorgeous:

Jelena-Ristic-profile-2 portrait-jelena-ristic

If you can’t afford  a holiday, get this look at home with some Sun-In and a bottle of Xen-Tan.  To recreate her glowing natural looking skin, try a moisturiser that enhances your glow (like this Garnier Dark Spot Corrector Illuminating Moisturiser) and a sweep of mascara to draw attention to your eyes. Her look is very minimal, which is perfect for summer, and as you can see she can definitely get away with it.

Another natural beauty fan, Maria Francisca Perello. She has a business degree and until recently didn’t come to watch her boyfriend, Rafa Nadal’s matches because she was concentrating on her career in Palma. However when she is seen, she is always naturally flawless.

Xisca+Perello+2013+Open+Day+8+CiUkY2RGHTTl Xisca-Perello-US-Open

Whether she’s going for smooth or textured hair, it always looks healthy and shiny. To make the most out of your curly locks like Xisca, try this Curl Definition Cream from Kerastase. And to recreate her defined brows, who better but the Queen of Brows, Anastacia Beverley Hills Dipbrow Pomade, available to UK residents via cultbeauty.co.uk

These are my top 3, but if you watch you will notice that all the tennis girlfriends favour the less is more look, and it really works for them. It is the look I am going to be going for this summer.
