How to: the 5 minute smokey eye

Smokey eyes are meant to look effortless. But in reality they often take about 50 stages of immaculate and precise blending, shading, contouring…who has the time! But with a product like a black powder eyeliner, you can create a smokey eye look in five minutes or less.

I use this No. 7 Smokey Powder Eyeliner and it looks like this

After priming your eyelids, apply the shadow like an eyeliner image.jpeg

Then take a fluffy blending brush (I use Mac 217) and blend and smudge the line

Repeat on the lower lash line imageimage

Then add a sweep of kohl liner on the lower water line and finish off with a ton of mascara

Clean up the loose powder, finish off the rest of your face, and enjoy all the time you just saved!

Brown Lipstick

As the nineties beauty trend is still going strong, I’m seeing a lot of brown lipstick everywhere.

image

Its definitely a classic nineties look

image

And it looks great with updated modern makeup.

A great brown lipstick that people are going bonkers for is this Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Birkin Brown (£23)

slightly cheaper are these Bobbi Brown Lipsticks in Brown and Chocolate (£19.50).

And this Iillamasqua lipstick in Shard (£18.50)

This one is good for transitioning into the trend because it has a red tinge.

They’re all very Kylie Jenner.

How to cover acne with makeup

Having suffered from acne in varying degrees of seriousness over the past ten years, I undertand how important makeup can be. With the right foundation routine, you can achieve the semblance of perfect skin, at least temporarily. That’s a big deal when you have acne.

How to cover up cystic acne

This makeup tutorial takes you through one girls routine in covering up her cystic acne. It’s informative, helpful and relatable. If you are struggling with the nightmare that is acne, I recommend this video. You are not alone in your struggle.

What colour eyebrow pencil should you be using?

In a society obsessed with eyebrows, it can seem like having the perfect brows is the most important thing in the world. Its not. But it can be a nice bonus. If you are blessed with naturally good eyebrows, finding the right eyebrow pencil is as simple as just matching it to your brow colour. But if, like me, your natural brows are almost nonexistent, you have to start with practically a blank canvas.

There are two basic rules for eyebrow colour.

  • If you have light hair, select a colour one or two shades darker than your hair colour
  • If you have dark hair, select a colour one or two shades lighter than your hair colour

Its that simple.

For example, when I was blonde I used Mac’s eyebrow pencil in Lingering

M1EF06

I went two shades darker than my blonde hair.

And now my hair is mostly brown, I can use the same shade of pencil because it is one shade lighter than my current hair colour!

So that worked out pretty well.

And remember, these are just guidelines. If you want blue eyebrows, have blue eyebrows. Its only eyebrows.

How to rock black lipstick

Khloe Kardashian posted this picture of herself earlier rocking black lipstick, and it got me thinking about all the other celebrities who have worn black lipstick and looked great doing it.

You don’t need to be any kind of famous to work this look, however. Lime Crime have a gorgeous matte black in their Velvetines collection ($20)

velvetine-blackvelvet_1_2 blackvelvet-lipswatch

The colour is called Black Velvet, and the gloss wand makes it really easy to apply.

The trick with black lipstick, and with any dark lip colour, is to have Q-tips and concealer on stand-by for clean ups. A dark colour is very unforgiving with errors. With a light colour the edges aren’t so defined or noticeable, but with black your edges have to be crisp. Which is why is it important to go round the lips with concealer and a decent brush after you have applied the colour.

With a bottom heavy makeup look like this, it helps to balance it out with bold brows. But with your eyes, anything goes. Whether you want to stick with just a simple cat eyeliner or go for a more sultry smokey eye, you can get away with either of these with a black lip. And if in doubt, just think: what would Rihanna do?

The ULTIMATE Kylie Jenner lip tutorial

So I did one of these a while ago, but I have to say that this is the ultimate Kylie Jenner lip tutorial:

Jenna absolutely nails it. Watch it. Its hilarious.

Types of eyeliner looks

Eyeliner is literally a pencil or brush, like any other, used to create art. Makeup is art. The proof is in these pictures of all the different ways you can do your eyeliner:

photo 1 (8) photo 2 (7) photo 3 (5)

Whether its a classic cat-eye or a simple flick, eyeliner can drastically change the shape and look of your eyes. My favourite is the arabic look. Lining all the way round my eyes accentuates their almond shape. I always like a long exaggerated flick to make my eyes look extra feline. These pictures are great for offering up some inspiration if you are bored with your go-to look. Subtlety isn’t always best when it comes to liner. EXTRAVAGANZAAA

Bright Brows

During my fashion week beauty round ups, I briefly mentioned one of the neon brow looks and how to recreate it. But I didn’t go into detail. I keep seeing this look everywhere so I thought I would try it for myself in a variety of different ways that don’t involve any pre bleaching.

For the first method, I just used a lip liner pencil (Mac’s Embrace Me) without any base on the brows:

photo 1 (4)

Obviously I need to get my eyebrows done so ignore the shape, but without any base I thought this worked well. Because its a pencil it was easy to control, however you can still see my hair colour underneath.

The next method I used was applying a base of white pencil, and then going over the brows with a matte eyeshadow:

photo 2 (5)

In terms of covering up my natural brow colour, this worked well. You just need to make sure the eyeshadow you use is pigmented enough to create a more opaque look.

The third method I used was lipstick applied with an eyebrow brush:

photo 3 (5)

This probably worked the least well because despite using a matte lipstick, it still created a very sheer look. When colouring your eyebrows, sheer is the last thing you want.

Finally I used my new Velvetines dupe lip colour, applied with its own wand, and gone over with a Mac lip liner in Currant:

photo 4 (3)

This method was the best for covering my natural eyebrows, but mainly because I used a dark colour. Because the lacquer applies wet and dries matte, it was really good at creating a matte opaque look that lasts all day. It lasts so well in fact that it was hard to take off.

Regardless, this is a fun, albeit bold, look and its a creative take on the eyebrow obsession of the nation.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Makeup

In honour of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in London tonight, I thought I’d do a VS makeup look. Their girls always look so glowy and the makeup is really easy to copy.

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 photo 4

The cheeks are very bronzed and glowy, with a natural pink gloss on the lips and gold and bronze eyeshadows on the eyes. They also use a lot of shimmer including under the eyes and on the cupids bow of the lips.

This is the look I did:

photo 3 (4)photo 2 (4)

For the base I used a radiance primer (Laura Mercier) and then YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat foundation mixed with a bit of NARS highlighter in Copacabana. This just adds more glow.

photo 3 (3)

On the eyes, I used Half Baked from the Urban Decay Naked palette for the gold all over the lid, then for the outer corner I used a bronze shadow from a NARS palette. I just did a thin line of gel eyeliner. Under the lower lashes I applied pressed power highlighter and lined the water line with a white pencil. I added dots of kohl liner on the lash line and then applied Clinique mascara. Of course, the Angels wear at least one pair of lashes, but I am currently out of falsies so I had to make do with my own lashes. In the corner of my eyes, just by the tear ducts, I applied a bit of highlighter. This gives a more wide awake look to the eyes.

photo 2 (3)

For the lips, I first of all lined them with a Chanel lip pencil in Natural and then went over them with Benefit lipgloss in Who Are You Wearing. I added a dab of shimmery highlighter to the cupids bow. This makes them seem fuller.

I finished off the look with some MORE highlighter, applied to the cheekbones and temples: Mac’s skinfinish in Superb. I finally added the blusher, Aglow by Clinique. This is a peachy/tan blusher which matches the colour favoured by the Angels.

photo 4 (2)

I love this look because its simple enough for daytime but its still glam and pretty. Perfect for school or work.

My favourite YouTube Beauty Gurus

I don’t watch many makeup videos on YouTube tbh, but when I do, its one of these guys.

First up is my girl Camila Coelho. Her English channel is MakeUpByCamila2. She is Brazilian so most of her videos are in Portuguese but she does separate ones for her English speaking fans. My favourite of her tutorials is the Valentine’s Day look

Next is Huda Kattan. A beauty blogger based in Dubai who posts killer makeup and beauty tips. My favourite video is her Lipliner Tutorial where she goes over the basics any girl needs if she want to learn the secrets of overlining (alla Kylie Jenner)

I learnt most of my makeup skills from drag queens, so its no surprise that my favourite makeup tutorials are by drag queens such as Vivienne Pinay, Miss Fame and Fendi Laken

ViviennePinay09_zps880a10c0

Of course, if you aren’t a drag queen you can skip a lot of the stages in the videos, and you don’t have to be as exaggerated with your makeup, but they are a really good source of tips and inspiration.
