AmfAR Gala 2014 Beauty Roundup

The annual amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) Gala is a black tie event thrown to raise money for the foundation and awareness of AIDS/HIV. Many celebrities attend and often it is a time for headline grabbing outfits, as this gets the foundation even more attention in the press. Celebrities are often criticised for their daring outfits but it is all to draw attention to the foundation and the good work it does.

This year the headlines were mainly about Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. This post with similarly be mainly about Rihanna as she looked, as always, fan-bloody-tastic.

That makeup. Come on. Flawless!

giphy giphy (1)

She has the perfect 80s orange lipstick to match her skin tone and her eye makeup, which is a burnt orange colour. All this makes her green eyes pop, and the chronic lashes for days add glamour.

The Hair

photo 3 photo 4 (2)

I LOVE the sleek ponytail look. It’s something I do a lot to instantly solve a bad hair day and it’s really easy to recreate. They look great with a centre or a side parting. Rihanna is rocking hers with a side parting which adds a bit of retro glamour to her look.

Next up, Miley’s makeup was actually really cute:

photo 4

The feline flick eye liner complimented her pixie crop and works really well with her elfin features. I would like to see this look on her more often,.

Lea Michelle looked FIRE

photo 1 (1) photo 4 (1)

Lea Michelle has the best beauty team. She always steals the show for me on the red carpet. I love the brown smokey eye, it works so well with her chocolate brown eyes and caramel highlights. Her hair is big and beautiful, and even though I don’t think the bronzer is the right colour for her, it does match her highlights.

Alessandra Ambrosio

photo 2 (1) photo 1 (2)

Another example of a great sleek ponytail, this time with a centre parting. When you have an intricate dress and makeup, it is always best to go for simple and elegant hair. This ponytail works perfectly for that purpose.

Kelly Osbourne

photo 2 (2)

I like this makeup because it reminds me of one of my staple looks. I often like to go for an edgier bold liner with that barbie pink shade of lipstick. It works really well with Kelly’s unique style and it’s very youthful. I used to use the Lady Gaga Viva Glam lipstick but as it’s limited edition and mines running low, a look-a-like is Mac’s Saint Germain (£15.50).

I can’t wait to see what these guys do for Halloween tonight!

Emmys 2014 Beauty Roundup

Last night, the 66th Primetime Emmy awards, saw the coming together of some of Televisions biggest stars (even if they did forget about Broad City). I could fill a whole separate blog talking about the shows, winners and nominees (I am TV’s biggest fan) but I’ll just stick to my favourite hair and makeup looks of the night.

10. Edie Falco

photo 2 (2)

I thought Edie looked gorgeous last night. Her tan perfectly complimented her sunkissed highlights, and she kept it glam with some fluttery lashes and a nude lip. Very Flattering.

9. Mayim Bialik

photo 1 (2)

I love this grecian hair on Blossom – I mean Amy – I mean Mayim!

8. Mindy Kaling

photo 1

Even though The Mindy Project didn’t receive any nominations, Mindy still won in terms of beauty. The sixties beehive hair (always shiny) plus blushing pink cheeks and smokey eyes equal one beautiful Mindy.

7. Christine Baranski

photo 2 (1)

My personal favourite star of The Good Wife looked chic and classy last night. Her signature hair was as always coiffed to perfection and her makeup is glam but understated.

6. Christina Hendricks

photo 1 (1)

I love this boho hair with the sheer blushed lips and coppery smokey eyes. Nothing could look better with her hair and skin tone. She looks beautiful.

5. Julie Bowen

photo 4 (2)

Peng. I really like this edgy version of the classic bob. It looks fierce with her smokey eyes.

4. Keke Palmer

photo 3 (1) photo 4 (1)

Keke’s hair and makeup is ON. POINT. I love the double nose piercings and the sleek long ponytail, plus the smokey cat eye to top it all off.

3. Kerry Washington

This ombre grown out bob is everything! And who would have thought matte denim blue eyeshadow would go so well with an orange dress? I need to find out what eyeshadow her makeup artist used.

2. Sarah Hyland

photo 3 (2)

My beauty winner. The simple hair donut looks gorgeous with Haley’s blonde highlights. Plus we can see all of her beautiful face. Her eyebrows look full without looking fake, her lashes and golden brown eyeshadow on the upper outer corner of her lids accentuate her hazel eyes and her lipstick is the perfect ‘Kylie Jenner’ shade. This is my favourite look of the entire evening, bar one..

Behind the Lense: A call for glasses on the red carpet!

Call me biased, but I think glasses deserve a more prominent place in the mainstream, and in beauty. As someone who is short-sighted, I understand the sacrifice of vision for beauty. I can’t wear contacts because my eyes are very dry and after about 20 minutes it feels like I have shards of glass digging into my eyes everytime I blink. Whenever I have worn contacts on a night out I have had to come home early, just to take them out. Or take them out in the club bathroom and throw them away even though they’re monthlies, not dailies. Therefore my only choices are wearing my glasses, which I happen to love, or going blind. Which has it’s own perils.

Glasses did have a moment in the sun recently, thanks to hipsters, and people even bought fake glasses just to follow this trend. That was a good time for us four-eyes. But no matter how fashionable they are, stars are still shedding their frames in favour for contacts on the red carpet. This is disappointing, and I want to call all glasses wearers who don’t like contacts to wear your pair with pride!

I personally think I look better with my glasses on! They make my nose look smaller and you can’t see fully how red and tired my eyes look. Plus not forgetting how much my cats like to rub their faces on them.

photo (2)

From a makeup artist’s point of view, I understand how you would want everyone to be able to see the work you’ve put in on your own or your client’s eyes. But some glasses add extra framing to the eyes and make them stand out even more. If you are going to a formal do, don’t be afraid to just wear your glasses! It’s way more attractive than squinting all night anyway. And these celebs look great in theirs:

photo 1 photo 4

The amazing Julia Louis-Dreyfus isn’t afraid to wear hers on a red carpet.

photo 2 (1)

Neither is Christina Hendricks, albeit at a Specsavers event..

Pure glamour on Meryl Streep

photo 4

Anne Hathaway looks even BETTER in her pair.

And my favourite glasses wearer – Tina Fey.

I am honoured to be part of this group and I look forward to seeing a further rise of glasses in the beauty world soon.

BET Awards 2014 Beauty Roundup

Last night was the annual BET Awards, which are definitely in my top 3 awards of the year, especially in terms of hair and makeup!

So here are my favourite beauty looks of the evening, in no particular order:

First up, Amber Rose. I’m such an Rosebud. I love this woman. Her look is amazing and she is such a good mother and is so supportive of Wiz. So she is always in my favourite looks of any award show she attends. Furthermore her makeup artist, Priscilla Ono, is perhaps my fave MUA of all time. Check out her gorgeous look below:

photo 1 photo 2

I love the natural golden glow on her eyes with the subtle pink sheen to the lips. Plus those eyebrows are on POINT! Perfect, Muva.

Next up, Paris Hilton. I know, but it isn’t about her, it’s all about her makeup artist, Etienne Ortega. His glam on Paris is flawless.

photo 3

The extra dark smokey eye with the nude lip compliments her hair and skin perfectly. He makes her look classy, which is pretty impressive. And I love the pink blusher. Pink blush is so underrated these days because everyone is feeling the peachy tones, but I still rep the pink.

This next woman has received a lot of flack recently for being asked to play Aliyah in a biopic about the singer’s life. Due to the hate, she turned the part down. I think the negativity was unnecessary because it was not her fault she was asked. People just don’t want this movie to happen but it was unfair to take it out on her. It is Zendaya Coleman.

zendaya62914-_sp

Unfortunately I could not find a close up of her face for the makeup, but I love this hair. As my dolls know, I am big into braids so anyone braided up gets my approval!

This next girl is one to watch. Tinashe.

photo 4

She’s a singer and performed her single ‘2 on’ at the show. She also looks fantastic with her caramel curls and super feline eye liner. It’s lined right into the inner corners to accentuate the almond shape of her eyes. So cute.

Next is cutie Karrueche. I personally preferred her overall look from the award’s Pre Dinner, but she still looked cute last night.

karrueche-tran-bet-awards-2014 ktran62914-_sp

The loose curls are very youthful and pretty, and I like the lined eyes with the nude lips, but personally I think this look from the Pre Dinner wins:

The sleek hair looks so much more grown up and less Disney. Plus the major eyelashes and super bronzed skin are killer. I love the dab of highlighter in the inner corners of the eyes. It’s a great trick for looking more awake. Beautiful.

Pia Mia Perez is some singer/songwriter/actress/model but probably more Instagram famous than actually famous.  Her looks are always so fire. She’s definitely my hairspiration and she looked fantastic last night.

photo 1 (1)

She is just so cool. I LOVE the hair with the white bandanna tied, plus the dark red lips with her skin tone is perfection. The has this gorgeous golden glow going on which is TO DIE.

RHOA ‘star’ Kenya Moore turnt up last night with this fabulous look in orange

Here’s a close up of her makeup:

photo 2 (1)

Her MUA, Arianna Garcia, used Anastasia Beverley Hills on her brows and the lashes are Flutter Lashes Inc. I love the top and bottom false lashes look. Later on in the evening she applied an orangey lipstick to match her dress and it looked great.

Actress Raven Goodwin also looked fierce last night.

raven-goodwin-bet-awards-2014 photo 3 (1)

Another girl rocking the orange lips. And that eye makeup is amazing. I love the eyeshadow in the outer edge of the lid going up to the brow bone, used to give a more feline shape to the eyes. Plus her skin is just glowing.

Last but not least, Adrienne Bailon looking hella elegant:

Bailon_BET_awards 451460068

Maybe the hair is just a little too scraped back for my taste, it just looks a bit severe with the already OTT makeup. This makeup would have worked better with a more relaxed ‘do. She’s got the eyes lined and lashed up to the nines and the orangey/red lips that are so on trend. Even though I am not a big fan of matte skin, it does look great  on her.

I recommend watching the awards, if only just for Chris Rock’s jokes.

BAFTAs 2014: Beauty Roundup

Taking place on the same night as the Billboard Music Awards were the Baftas. This was whole different kind of look to the BBMAs. One is British TV actors, and the other is pop stars. Two very different styles, but some equally beautiful looks. Here are my faves:

Josephine de la Baume

Image

Josephine is a french actress and is also married to Mark Ronson. I admit, I didn’t know who this was and had to look her up. But I’ve included her because I can’t get over how beautiful her hair is. Such a beautiful colour and that Veronica Lake style really suits it. Makeup-wise there’s not much to speak of except she has gorgeous skin, which is complimented well by her foundation and peach blush.

Naomie Harris

Image

Naomie Harris is already super pengers, so it must be so fun doing her makeup. Her eyebrows are perfectly arched and not too overdrawn, and she looks beautiful with that arabic style eye liner and Kardashian style lashes. It really accentuates her feline shaped eyes. And to top it off just a slight sheen of pink on her lips to match her outfit. Perfection.

Lupita Nyong’o

Image

Lupita is always on my beauty lists because I love her use of colour in her makeup. Her MUA has gone for a teal green on the eyes to match the bright green of her dress with a reddish/brown lip. Even though this is a lot of bright colours, it doesn’t look like too much. Somehow it all works and still looks minimal and elegant.

Lea Seydoux

Image

Image

Blue is the Warmest Colour‘s Lea Seydoux is another who’s chosen to wear Veronica Lake waves and side parting to compliment the red in her hair. If this is her natural hair colour, I am so jealous, if this is the work of her hair stylist, I need his/her details. And the makeup is gorgeous. A sweep of blue to match her dress with barely there eyebrows and nude lips, so all the attention goes to her eyes. It was a well made decision.

Cate Blanchett

Image

Image

Oscar winner, Cate, is showing off her flawless alabaster skin here by utilising a loosely swept back updo. Both skin and hair look great. The rest of her makeup (mascara, eyebrows, shade of lipstick) is not my fave but I hardly notice as I’m too busy staring at that complexion.

And finally, I had to include the big winner of the night and my favourite actress, Olivia Colman

Image

Image

She is just glowing and her happiness radiates. Which is really the best makeup. Also those killer falsies with the 1940s hair and lipstick aren’t bad either.

Overall there was lots of 1940s hair and lots of gorgeous skin. But the makeup was more understated that the BBMAs and slightly less glam, which suited the event. I still enjoyed this different type hair and makeup, but reviewing a music event is a lot more fun.

Met Gala 2014 Beauty Roundup

Monday night was the annual Met Gala in New York. For those who don’t know what this is it is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It is one of the biggest fashion events of the year. Now I don’t know much about fashion, I just like things that look nice, but I do know about makeup and a lot of that makeup on monday was FIRE. The makeup artists were really doing their thing. So here is a selection of my favourite makeup looks, in no particular order.

Image

Jessica Alba. I couldn’t find a close up of her face but you can tell just from this picture the gorgeous peachy/gold smokey eye her MUA has done. And that skin is glowing perfection.

Image

Gabrielle Union. Again, no closeup, but this girl always looks peng. She’s one of my faves and her makeup is always on point. Her smokey cat eye and nude lips goes perfectly with her dress.

Image

Image

Amber Heard. What I love about this is something that’s very trendy in makeup right now, lining the lower waterline with a white or nude pencil and then applying shadow underneath the waterline and using plenty of mascara or even false lashes on the lower lashes. And her lipstick is flawless.

Image

Image

Kendall Jenner. Incidentally this is my favourite dress and its topshop! Kendall is obviously incredibly beautiful so she can pull of any makeup look, but this is another one where I love the lower lashes and the way they’ve lined the lower lash line with a subtle grey shadow. Plus the peachy/gold lipgloss matching her blusher.

Image

Image

This look is classic SJP. She definitely hasn’t gone for a white pencil on her lower waterline and I love it. This is how I personally prefer to do my smokey eyes and I always take inspiration from her. And her skin looks fabulous. Just look at that top picture. She looks beaut.

Image

Image

Lea Michelle looking FIRE! This is a gorgeous sixties look. The bold arched eyebrows, the full false lashes, the nude lined lips. She has, however, gone for a dewy skin look as opposed to a matte look which is more classic of the sixties, but I prefer a dewy look anyway. Plus the hair, I can’t even. Makes me want to go brunette.

Image

Image

Karlie Kloss. I’m so glad she posted this close up picture (sorry Taylor Swift for cropping you out) because here you can really see how gorgeous her makeup is and how well it’s been applied. I love everything from the cut crease and thick liner to the matte nude lips. Just wow.

Image

Image

Joan Smalls. This may be my favourite overall look. I just brings a bit of youth to a slightly stiff tradition. Those indigo lips! and that fishtail plait! with that ear cuff! To be fair, Joan will always outshine people no matter how she looks. But this look for me just eclipsed everyone else.

Image

Image

Rihanna, or #rhenna. This is another look that brings some edge to the stuffiness of a ‘gala’ which I love. Let alone her hair which I love for it’s early naughties girl band style, but her face is on point. I love the pinky purple shadows her MUA has used and the highlighter under her brows. Perfection, Rih.

Image

Image

Suki Waterhouse. I’m not usually that into red lips, but for some reason I just love how she wears them. Maybe it’s the subtle eye makeup, the simple hair and the lack of adornment, but they really work. Plus there is a slight vampy look to this, like the MUA has used a slightly darker liner.

And honourable mention goes to…

Image

Lupita Nyong’o. Because those eyes! Blue liner is so in right now.

Those are some of my favourite makeup looks from the evening. What were yours?
